Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Friends are forever, as the saying goes.<\/p>\n<p><em>But is it actually a good idea to keep all friends forever? Can you have &#8216;toxic&#8217; friends? And if so, what should you do next?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Are they really a &#8216;toxic&#8217; friend?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The internet has led to an era of labelling. <\/strong>Words like &#8216;toxic&#8217; and &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">narcissist<\/a>&#8216; are bandied about far too easily, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">real connection<\/a> is sadly getting lost.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">So first things first \u2013 yes, some <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">relationships are unhealthy<\/a><\/span> and it&#8217;s important to learn the signs of this. But it&#8217;s also important to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">ask good questions<\/a><\/span>, like, is your friend really &#8216;toxic&#8217;? Or are they going through a hard time or a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">big life change<\/a><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> that means they are not themselves<\/span><\/span>? Is it possible you are actually bored with them, and creating this<a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"> &#8216;toxic&#8217; drama<\/a> to avoid admitting to it?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Signs of an unhealthy relationship<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The signs that a relationship isn&#8217;t a real friendship but an unhealthy alliance are the same as if you have an unhealthy relationship with a<\/strong> family member or with a romantic partner or colleague.<\/p>\n<p>They can include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">constantly criticised and putdown<\/a><\/li>\n<li>he or she does not respect your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">personal boundaries<\/a><\/li>\n<li>they do not live up to agreements you&#8217;ve made between you or lie to you<\/li>\n<li>an unequal give and take of time, energy, and goodwill<\/li>\n<li>you do not share<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\"> personal values<\/a> but rather they behave in ways that make you uncomfortable<\/li>\n<li>you struggle to relax and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">be your real self <\/a>around them<\/li>\n<li>you are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\"> constantly drained<\/a> and miserable in their presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_17558\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17558\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/16037008931_163eb864ed-400x268.jpg\" alt=\"toxic friends\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/16037008931_163eb864ed-400x268.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/16037008931_163eb864ed.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/16037008931_163eb864ed-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/65416236@N05\/16037008931\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Deornelas4<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>It can pay to take a moment to consider how you ended up &#8216;friends&#8217; in the first place.<\/strong> Did you slowly get to know each other and realise you shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">mutual values <\/a>or positive hobbies and interests? Or did you quickly unite over something negative and unsupportive, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">a love of drinking <\/a>or both<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\"> hating your boss<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">[Read our comprehensive and free <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Relationships<\/a><span style=\"color: #993366;\"> for more on the difference between a healthy and unhealthy relationship.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When is it time to just walk away from someone?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Abuse in it&#8217;s various forms<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/domestic-abuse-help-guide.htm\">physical abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">verbal abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">emotional abuse <\/a>and financial abuse &#8211; are all valid reasons to make a clean cut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If a friend hits you<\/strong>, even as an apparent &#8216;joke&#8217; or if they later claim it won&#8217;t happen again, they need help and you need to take care of yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verbal and emotional abuse can be trickier. When to draw the line?<\/strong> With verbal abuse, be sure you do not have a real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">problem with overreacting<\/a> and actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">push people into criticising you<\/a>. And you&#8217;ll probably walk right into a similar relationship until you finally learn these things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So stop pretending things are fine, and try to deal with the situation<\/strong> with as much honesty and communication as possible.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Find a private moment and have a talk, making sure to keep your language blame free. Merely share your observations (preferably backed up with facts) and how you feel. Be open to the fact that you could be wrong \u2013 you might not have the whole story about what the other person is going through that is affecting their behaviour, for example.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What NOT to do when leaving a friendship behind<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to look at what NOT to do when trying to put a friendship to rest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do not bring other people into the discussion (it&#8217;s between you and them)<\/li>\n<li>do not gossip behind his or her back instead of talking to them directly<\/li>\n<li>do not approach them publicly or bring along other people<\/li>\n<li>do not assume it&#8217;s all their fault, either \u2013 relationships consist of two people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Be honest with yourself and take responsibility for any way you might be contributing to the strain.<\/strong> What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-expectations.htm\">expectations<\/a> do you have of the other person, for starters? Are these expectations fair? And how did this relationship begin? Did you, for example, meet them at university when you were lonely and they seemed exciting, choosing to overlook their unreliability that they did not hide but you now call &#8216;toxic&#8217;?<\/p>\n<h2>So it&#8217;s okay to move on from friendships, then?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>We all grow and change throughout our lives, and it&#8217;s neither realistic nor healthy to expect to stay friends with everyone.<\/strong> If you no longer share interests or a mindset with someone, it&#8217;s okay to be honest with yourself and them that your friendship was great but has had its time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What might be the sign that something isn&#8217;t okay, however, is if you constantly find you are &#8216;breaking up&#8217; with friends. If you can&#8217;t stop throwing yourself into intense and damaging friendships you then feel a need to escape, do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-i-need-counseling.htm\">consider seeing a counsellor. <\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It might be that your childhood has left you unable to differentiate between what trust is and isn&#8217;t,<\/strong> suffering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">fear of intimacy<\/a>, or with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/fear-of-intimacy-help-guide.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a> that leads to destructive choices. A counsellor can help you get to the root of the pattern and change it.
