If so, you have come face to face with your self-concept.<\/p>\n<h2>What is &#8216;self concept&#8217; in psychology?<\/h2>\n<p>Self-concept is hardly a new idea. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\">Ancient eastern practices<\/a>, for example, often talked about self-identity, and the question of \u2018self\u2019 has long been debated by philosophers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Self-concept in modern psychological use refers to how you think about and see yourself. It contains all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">beliefs<\/a>, ideas, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspectives<\/a> you have of yourself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This includes not just your present-day self, but<\/strong> your past and future selves (which you see through the filter of your present self in any case).<\/p>\n<h2>The ingredients of your self-concept<\/h2>\n<p>Things your self-concept can include are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sexuality (I&#8217;m heterosexual)<\/li>\n<li>gender (I&#8217;m female)<\/li>\n<li>culture and race (I&#8217;m Jewish)<\/li>\n<li>physical descriptors and abilities (I am tall, I run fast)<\/li>\n<li>mental abilities (I&#8217;m good at academics)<\/li>\n<li>spirituality and religion (I&#8217;m spiritual)<\/li>\n<li>social roles (I&#8217;m an aunt and social worker)<\/li>\n<li>personal traits\/ character attributes (I&#8217;m a loud talker, I&#8217;m introverted)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">beliefs about self <\/a>(people like me, I&#8217;m funny)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-existential-psychotherapy.htm\">existential <\/a>statements (I&#8217;m a human being, I am one with all that is).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How is self-concept formed?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_18126\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15438469548_fc7e2c9465-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18126\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15438469548_fc7e2c9465-3-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"what is self-concept\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15438469548_fc7e2c9465-3-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15438469548_fc7e2c9465-3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15438469548_fc7e2c9465-3-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pedrosimoes7\/15438469548\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Pedro Ribeiro Sim\u00f5es<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Our &#8216;self&#8217; concept is largely influenced by our interactions with others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This starts from when we are infants just realising we are a different object then those around us. It continues with our interactions with parents, teachers, role models, and peers.<\/p>\n<p>Self concept is also created <strong>by our environments and experiences. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Why is self-concept such a big deal?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Self-concept is a huge field of study in psychology. It helps psychologists understand how humans develop, and how important our social interactions are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, self-concept is the subject of many psychological &#8216;scales&#8217; and questionnaires used to evaluate a child&#8217;s cognitive and language development, or an adolescent&#8217;s identity issues.<\/p>\n<p>Bracken, a well-known school psychologist who developed several of the most-used scales, put it this way &#8212; <strong><em>self-concept \u201cinfluences an individual&#8217;s current behaviours, and predicts an individual&#8217;s future behaviours&#8221;.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Can my self-concept change?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Self-concept tends to change with age.<\/strong> As children and adolescents, our self-concept can be flexible, as we are still figuring out who we really are and constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparing ourselves to others<\/a>. As older adults, however, our self concept is more fixed. We know our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a> and are more self-aware.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also life changes that can heavily affect our self-concept.<\/strong> These include things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>loss and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bereavement-counselling-grieve.htm\">bereavement<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">trauma<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">abuse<\/a><\/li>\n<li>major accidents or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cyberchondria-addicted-looking-illness.htm\">illnesses<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Main theories of Self-Concept<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_18134\" style=\"width: 351px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18134\" class=\" wp-image-18134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33584900870_ae9aab0341-400x272.jpg\" alt=\"what is self concept\" width=\"341\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33584900870_ae9aab0341-400x272.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33584900870_ae9aab0341.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mwf2005\/33584900870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">muffinn<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many great names in psychology have investigated how we evaluate ourselves as individuals, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-introduction-jungian-psychology.htm\">Carl Jung<\/a>, Adler, Erickson, and Maslow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it is Carl Rogers, seen as the father of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-person-centred-counselling.htm\">person-centred therapy<\/a>, who is perhaps the most quoted in talks about self- identity. He saw three main concepts to self-identity. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>self image &#8211; the way we see ourselves<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">self-worth <\/a>&#8211; the value we place on ourselves<\/li>\n<li>ideal self &#8211; what you wish you were actually like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bracken, however, used the following breakdown<\/strong> with his approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>physical (looks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">fitness<\/a>, health)<\/li>\n<li>social (how we interact with others)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/keeping-secrets-from-family.htm\">family<\/a> (how we behave in our family)<\/li>\n<li>competence (how we manage basic needs of living)<\/li>\n<li>academic (school and intellect)<\/li>\n<li>affect (understanding of emotional states).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can self-concept help me?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Your self-concept is an incredibly useful tool for helping you see where things are &#8216;not quite right&#8217; for you.<\/strong> An example of this is when we look at our ideal self versus our present self-concept. If you always have an ideal self in mind that is vastly different from your daily self-concept, it is quite likely you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and could use learning some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self-compassion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-concept can also help us see how much a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">life change<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">trauma <\/a>has affected us.<\/strong> Sometimes life change strengthens and clarifies our self-concept. But if you feel you&#8217;re losing your self-concept, it could be the experience has triggered an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity crisis <\/a>and it&#8217;s time to seek support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you feel you have no self-concept, or that your self-concept changes all the time<\/strong>, then it can be a useful indicator of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can a counsellor or psychotherapist help me with self-identity?<\/h2>\n<p>A qualified<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\"> counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> helps you not only understand your self-concept, but handle all the issues that can arise from problems with self-concept.<\/p>\n<p>This can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorders-help-guide.htm\">eating disorders<\/a>, identity crisis, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Working with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-a-good-therapist.htm\">good counsellor or psychotherapist <\/a>can give you the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unconditional-positive-regard-what-it-is-and-why-you-need-it.htm\">unconditional positive regard<\/a> that you need to align your concepts of your ideal self with your present-day self.
