Expand your timeline.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Life is rarely like the movies where sex is perfect from the first kiss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some people are unable to relax sexually until <\/strong>they have had <em>substantial<\/em> time to truly get to know and trust someone. This isn&#8217;t a few weeks or a few months, it&#8217;s at least six months or more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Others who think they have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-sex-drive.htm\">very high sex drive <\/a>actually tend to fizzle out to<\/strong> more normal levels when they relax and stop trying to impress or avoid emotional intimacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So yes, if you already have several red flags about a new partner,<\/strong> and a mismatched sexual drive is yet another issue, it might be that you are not suited to each other. It happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But running away before something has time to develop is a far more modern conundrum.<\/strong> Do you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-you-cant-fall-in-love.htm\">a record of short relationships<\/a>? Is this whole sex drive issue just another reason to run away like always?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Be sure that a different sex drive is the real issue.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Yes, some people seem genetically designed<\/strong> to have a certain sex drive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But it&#8217;s also possible for people to create the belief that they have a high or low sex drive, and then use this belief avoid emotional intimacy with others.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_18174\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7513317830_af403d65e0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18174\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7513317830_af403d65e0-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7513317830_af403d65e0-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7513317830_af403d65e0.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7513317830_af403d65e0-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/shankaronline\/7513317830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">shankar s.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>If every time you meet someone they can&#8217;t live up to your impossibly high<\/strong> sex drive, you have found a way to avoid the emotional vulnerability that a long-term relationship involves.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the same with keeping others at arm&#8217;s length because of an apparent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-sex-drive-2.htm\"> low sex drive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This sort of pattern is related to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>. For example, someone who suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">childhood sexual abuse<\/a> can be left with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">hidden core belief <\/a>&#8216;I must be desirable to everyone&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>They might think they need sex all the time, even when during sex they are completely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">disassociated<\/a>. Look at the big picture.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>A problematic sex life can be so all-consuming it narrows our<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective <\/a>to the point we overlook the obvious in other areas of our lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Has you or your partner had a change in sex drive that happens to coincide with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">major life change<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">losing their job <\/a>or experiencing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/symptoms-of-bereavement-how-to-cope.htm\">bereavement<\/a>? Any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">life change<\/a> that affects confidence often tends to affect sex drive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If this is the case, it might be time to take the focus off sex drive and onto<\/strong> lowering any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-and-depression.htm\">stress, anxiety, or depression<\/a> present.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Get rid of boxes.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_18179\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18179\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8627039067_051f97fd61-1-400x334.jpg\" alt=\"different sex drives\" width=\"400\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8627039067_051f97fd61-1-400x334.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8627039067_051f97fd61-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sheila_sund\/8627039067\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Sheila Sund<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious <\/a>&#8216;boxes&#8217; we can bring to a relationship when it comes to sex.<\/strong> We of course then expect our partner to fit the box.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is the box of &#8216;the way my other partners were sexually&#8217;, the box of &#8216;what society and media tells me a sex life should be like&#8217;, and even &#8216;what my parents taught me a sex life should be like&#8217;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What if all your ideas of sex and intimacy are just that &#8211; ideas?<\/strong> And perhaps a good sex life is unique to the people it is between? What if there are ways of enjoying a healthy sex life that are not what you expected?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can be as simple as recognising that your partner just isn&#8217;t<\/strong> the traditional &#8216;before bed, possibly again in the morning&#8217; type, but only functions in late afternoons. Or it might be about exploring sexual play and finding things that turn you on that you never thought of before.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Beware of communication errors.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You&#8217;ve heard it a million times already \u2013 sex works best when there is communication.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But all too many times people use the excuse of communication to lay on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> &#8211; which are surefire ways to kill sexual attraction in our partner. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This is hidden in statements like<\/strong> &#8216;you make me feel ugly if you don&#8217;t want sex with me&#8217;, or &#8216;I&#8217;ve lost my confidence because you don&#8217;t seem to want sex with me\/ only seem to like me for sex&#8217;, and &#8216;I used to feel good about sex until I met you&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead, take out the &#8216;you did\/you said&#8217; statements and try &#8220;I feel&#8221; statements, staying open to the idea you might not<\/strong> always be right. So you might even want to try something along the lines of, &#8220;I know I am not always right about everything, and I can sometimes misunderstand things, but I feel (this way) when you do (this thing)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Get clear on your relationship purpose.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Is it a crime to be in a relationship where sex is not a central theme? <\/strong>Modern day media would have you think so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if that&#8217;s been all your relationships to date, and now you are<\/strong> in one with less sex than you are used to, take time to consider what else this relationship offers you. Is it an experience of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">real connection<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">authenticity<\/a> you&#8217;ve lacked?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you took away the idea that you had to find Mr. or Mrs. &#8220;Perfect and Forever&#8221;, how would you feel about being in this relationship? Is there something here you&#8217;d like to explore?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Consider couples therapy.<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Yes, you knew it was coming. But here&#8217;s the thing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/couples-therapy.htm\">couples counselling<\/a>&#8211; <em>it works. <\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The idea that couples therapy is just for married people is incorrect. It&#8217;s good for any stage of a relationship where you need support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have been with someone for several months and are not sure that it can continue to work with your different sex drives, <\/strong>a few sessions with a couples counsellor can help you clarify what changes are possible for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therapy means you continue forward with a renewed<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a>, or you can let each other go without the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"> drama<\/a> and damage that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a> based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">conflict<\/a> can create.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Harley Therapy connects you with couples counsellors in central London locations.
