Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Is your<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationship<\/a><\/span> still alive (or at least dragging along), <strong>but your sex life is a desert?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What can you do if your sex life has ground to a halt?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Re-Starting Your Sex Life<\/h2>\n<p>Note that the below tools for re-starting your sex life with a long-term partner assume the following.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.) You have both taken the time to make sure the problem isn&#8217;t physical.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Things like heart disease, an underactive thyroid, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/body-image-pregnancy-birth.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pregnancy<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">menopause<\/span><\/a>, and taking new medications including contraception can all cause your sex drive to plummet. <em>If any of these are a possibility, do talk to your GP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) You did have a good sex life, but now it&#8217;s vanished.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you feel you have <em>never<\/em> had a good sexual relationship with your partner, the below advice might help. But also read our articles on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-sex-drives.htm\">different libidos<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-sex-drive-2.htm\">having a low sex drive<\/a><\/span> \/\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-sex-drive.htm\">having a high sex drive<\/a><\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-sex-life-normal.htm\">what a healthy sex life actually looks like<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Start with a trust inventory.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_18547\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9711944200_684396643f.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18547\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9711944200_684396643f-320x400.jpg\" alt=\"sex life and trust\" width=\"320\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9711944200_684396643f-320x400.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9711944200_684396643f.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: Stefany<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Why is it some couples stay together after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-people-cheat-on-partners.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">betrayal<\/span><\/a> or challenging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">life change<\/span><\/a>, and others don&#8217;t?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beneath the various reasons (our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/raise-independent-children.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">children<\/span><\/a>, our life together, etc) it&#8217;s inevitably down to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trust.htm\">trust<\/a><em>. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If there is still even a <em>spark<\/em> of trust left after a divisive experience, <\/strong>there is a greater chance the partnership can survive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How does this relate to your sex life? Most people&#8217;s libidos are affected by trust (yes, even men&#8217;s). The more they trust, the more free they feel to be physical. If they don&#8217;t trust, they shut down, and sex becomes mechanical or non-existent. Grow the trust, and the attraction returns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Putting your attention on how much trust exists in your relationship <\/strong>is<em> a habit of attention that can grow the trust you already have. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make a list of all the ways you still share trust, <em>no matter how small.<\/em><\/strong> Do you trust them to pick you up from work? Be on time for dinner? \u00a0Be a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">good parent<\/a><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try to focus on three moments you trust your partner each day.<\/strong> You might find you trust them in bigger ways, too. You trust them to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/keeping-secrets-from-family.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">your secrets<\/span><\/a> and be on your side at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\">family reunions<\/a><\/span>, for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[And if you discover you don&#8217;t trust them<em> at all<\/em>? It might be time to move on. Spend quality time alone.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Convinced your partner doesn&#8217;t notice or want you any more? \u00a0It is worth honestly asking yourself \u2013 do I notice and want<em> myself<\/em> these days?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Spending time alone might sound counterintuitive to helping your sex life, but note we&#8217;re talking about\u00a0<em>quality\u00a0<\/em>time alone here.\u00a0<\/strong>This is time spend getting back in touch with yourself, and what lights you up. <em>If you are honest with yourself, what makes you feel totally alive inside?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s\u00a0hobbies you&#8217;ve lost sight of in your relationship, or trying the ones you&#8217;ve always wanted to but your partner doesn&#8217;t, or starting that project you&#8217;ve put off for years? <strong>Doing things for yourself leads to raised<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">self-esteem<\/a><\/span>, which is extremely attractive to all those around us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Re-connecting to your creative thinking also puts an end to any<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> cycles of drama<\/span> <\/a>in your relationship<\/strong> that were unconsciously being used to avoid boredom (and yes, a war over different sex drives or no sex life can sometimes be just that).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Still not convinced? Creativity (and that doesn&#8217;t have to be art, it can be anything that gets you into a &#8216;zone&#8217; or thinking differently) has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1560060\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">linked by a research study to sexual success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What if spending time alone means you discover you don&#8217;t like yourself, <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">don&#8217;t even know who you are<\/a> <\/span>or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">don&#8217;t know what you want<\/a><\/span>, or that your self-esteem is at rock bottom? Then some of that time might be best spent not totally alone, but with a therapist. No relationship can go well if you are using it to hide your issues with.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It&#8217;s especially important that you see a counsellor or therapist if you suspect you are suffering from<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> too much stress<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a><\/span>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depression<\/span><\/a>. All three conditions can negatively affect your libido. Seeking support might not only save your sex life and partnership, it will help with other areas of life like your career and your family life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Or they tell you to &#8216;start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">communicating more<\/span><\/a>&#8216;. They will encourage you to book &#8216;date nights&#8217; together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These common tips are actually all about the same thing. They are about forming a new <\/strong>sense of\u00a0<em>connection\u00a0<\/em>with your partner through shared experience and openness<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, even if the sex experiments are an utter disaster<\/strong>, the laughter and shared memory form a sense of connection that might have long been missing between you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">Connection<\/a><\/span>, daring to be vulnerable and expose your authentic self, is a crucial ingredient of intimacy (and good sex). <\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Long-term partnership can leave us in entrenched patterns that mean we&#8217;ve actually long stopped connecting and are instead<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\"> making assumptions<\/a><\/span> about how well we know the other.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not sure if you are or aren&#8217;t connecting?<\/strong> Ask yourself questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much do you really share with each other these days?<\/li>\n<li>Do you tell him or her when you are upset about something, or are they the last to know?<\/li>\n<li>How often do you turn to your partner and let him or her help you?<\/li>\n<li>Do you talk about your hopes and dreams, or just about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/surviving-the-school-holidays.htm\">schedules and kids<\/a><\/span>?<\/li>\n<li>Do they know your shadow side, or do you try to hide it from them?<\/li>\n<li>Do you let them see you be vulnerable and afraid, or hide it all behind<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">conflict<\/a><\/span>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In an era of self-improvement, it&#8217;s not hard to find\u00a0<\/strong>books and workshops on\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communication<\/a> <\/span>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authentic connection<\/span><\/a>.
