The route to becoming a psychotherapist<\/a> in the UK is far from straightforward<\/strong>. There are actually three ways to becoming a registered psychotherapist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One way is to take a counselling<\/a> diploma then continue on to a<\/strong> psychotherapy MA from there. This can be a cheaper option if finances are a concern. (See our article on Counselling Courses in London<\/a> if interested).<\/p>\n

Then there is the counselling psychology route.<\/strong> This entails taking a BA in psychology then choosing a counselling psychology MA. (See our article on “Psychotherapist vs Counselling Psychologist<\/a>” for more on this front).<\/p>\n

Finally, there is the straightforward psychotherapy school<\/a> route,<\/strong> where you start and end with studying the transformative art of talk therapy. London is the most popular city for such courses.<\/p>\n

If psychoanalytic therapy<\/a> is your favourite school of thought, this highly regarded school might be the one for you.<\/p>\n

The Tavistock and Portman Trust is NHS owned and is popular with those who are already health practitioners<\/strong> and want to make the move into mental health. Although anyone can apply.<\/p>\n

They offer a psychoanalytic and psychodynamic<\/a>-based foundation year. Their masters program has the benefit of an NHS clinical placement.<\/p>\n
