Welcome to your shadow self.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the &#8216;shadow self&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The term \u2018the shadow\u2019 was made popular by<\/strong> psychoanalyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-introduction-jungian-psychology.htm\">Carl Jung<\/a>. He saw it as the uncivilised, even primitive side of our nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We all have a shadow self. <\/strong>It is generally made up of the parts of ourselves we deem unacceptable. For many people this means things like our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-and-personality-disorders.htm\">rage<\/a>, laziness, and cruelty. But you might also see as uncivilised and unacceptable things like your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-power-how-to.htm\">personal power<\/a>, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-counterdependency.htm\">independence<\/a>, or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-be-less-sensitive.htm\">emotional sensitivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Of course some of us don&#8217;t realise we have a shadow side as we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">feel ashamed<\/a> and lack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-awareness.htm\">self-awareness<\/a>. We have not yet taken the journey of self, and instead<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\"> project our own shadow onto others<\/a> around us. We are sure it&#8217;s them who has the problem, not us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Shadow and psychological projection<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\">Psychological projection<\/a> is when we attribute an unconscious thought, feeling, or even talent of our own onto another person.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>When it comes the shadow, it will be a seemingly \u2018unacceptable\u2019 attribute <\/strong>you see in another person, and the projection often comes couched in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, you might feel that everyone around you is lazy and selfish. <\/strong>The reason you never get ahead in life is apparently because they are all too self-absorbed to help you. If you looked at yourself honestly, you would likely find it\u2019s you yourself who have a tendency to be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-you-be-selfish-and-still-be-a-good-person.htm\"> self-centred<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/passivity-in-relationships.htm\">lazy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Isn&#8217;t my shadow side bad?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_18640\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18640\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8126559158_9093490e10-400x277.jpg\" alt=\"shadow self\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8126559158_9093490e10-400x277.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8126559158_9093490e10.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/petsadviser-pix\/8126559158\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Petful<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Although we might want to see our shadow as \u2018negative\u2019, this is not true<\/strong>. The Shadow is rather what you yourself <em>perceive<\/em> as dark and weak about yourself, and therefore needing to be hidden and denied. But this depends on your own<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> perspective<\/a> , and your levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">self-esteem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Carl Jung firmly believed that we need to fully see and accept this dark side of ourselves to be a fully integrated human.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>It is only through our own effort to<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\"> learn who we are<\/a> and cultivate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\">self-acceptance<\/a> that we can recognise and embrace our shadow, and then benefit from the many gifts the shadow offers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Yes, gifts. All the parts we previously deemed &#8216;bad&#8217; have things to offer. Anger, for example, helps us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">set boundaries<\/a>. Sadness helps us move on and let go. Our shadow elements only present a problem if we mishandle them or use them incorrectly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">How do I get rid of my Shadow self?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>You can\u2019t \u2018not have\u2019 a shadow.<\/strong> No matter how \u2018nice\u2019 or \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-happiness-really.htm\">happy<\/a>\u2019 someone may seem, they have a shadow side like anyone else.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Nor can you \u2018get rid of\u2019 or \u2018heal\u2019 your shadow. It\u2019s an essential and useful part of you and your personal power, and the idea is to integrate it, not &#8216;heal&#8217; it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And note that trying not to have a shadow only backfires. When we <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">repress and deny things<\/a> about ourselves, they do not disappear. He also talked of the \u2018collective shadow\u2019,<\/strong> where people united their shadows in groups or as societies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">He saw this as a very great danger to civilisation when a collective shadow was \u2018projected\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>An example of the collective shadow at work would be<\/strong> the Holocaust, where people united their hatred of one race and the end result was a great tragedy.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Why do I need to know my shadow?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>When we recognise and face our shadow, we can become <\/strong>more whole and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\"> balanced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Again, the shadow gives us gifts <\/strong>like boundary setting, personal power, and emotional fluency.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Knowing your shadow side will also<a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\"> improve your relationships<\/a>. When we can accept and understand ourselves, we are then more able to accept and understand others.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If might also help you be more creative.<\/strong>\u00a0Jung connected the shadow to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a>. Perhaps the more free we feel emotionally, the more free we are in the ways that we think and accomplish things.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">How to know your shadow self<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The shadow can be one of the first things we face when we <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">start attending therapy.<\/a> The creation of a safe space where we can talk to someone who isn\u2019t personally invested in our life means we find ourselves saying things we didn\u2019t even know we think and feel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other ways to access your shadow include<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\"> journalling<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dream-therapy.htm\">working with your dreams<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-archetypes.htm\">archetypes <\/a>you find in them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course looking at what you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/blame.htm\">constantly blaming others<\/a> for tends to be a direct route<\/strong> to your shadow self. What are the things you like least in other people? Does that characteristic exist within you, too?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s important to recognise and understand your shadow side, but not over-identify with it.<\/strong> If you are going through a period of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>, for example, it\u2019s not the time to indulge in shadow work because you are not in the headspace to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\"> recognise your strengths<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Help to understand your shadow<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/jungian-analyst-london.htm\">Jungian analysis<\/a> is of course helpful as a route to exploring your shadow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But really any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychotherapeutic-approaches-the-main-schools-of-thought.htm\">sort of talk therapy<\/a> that seeks a bigger picture of how you became the person you <\/strong>are today will be just as useful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This includes long-term therapies like<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychodynamic-psychotherapy.htm\"> psychodynamic psychotherapy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">schema therapy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-existential-psychotherapy.htm\">existential therapy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/dialectical-behaviour-therapy-london.htm\">dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).<\/a> You could also start with a shorter term \u00a0therapy, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"> cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-cognitive-analytic-therapy.htm\">cognitive analytic therapy<\/a>\u00a0(CAT), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dynamic-interpersonal-therapy.htm\">dynamic interpersonal therapy (DIT)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Want to explore your shadow side in a safe, friendly environment with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\">trained and professional therapist<\/a>?
