Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Is there anything worse than gathering your courage to let someone know you are struggling, only to be faced with mental health stigma?<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of mental health stigma<\/h2>\n<p>You tell a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleague <\/a>at work you are suffering from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">anxiety disorder<\/a> and they give you a blank stare then change the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Or you tell the person you\u2019ve been dating lately (and really like) that you have had problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">depression<\/a> in the past, and they respond by telling you to &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">be more grateful<\/a>\u00a0for what you have&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>And your heart crashes. The black hole re-opens and you fall in.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Such responses are not about you, they are about the other person. Mental health stigma is uneducated, outdated, and insensitive, but sadly still happens all the time.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">How to handle anxiety and depression stigma\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So how you can you handle it when you are face-to-face with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-in-the-media-why-we-should-all-be-concerned.htm\">ignorance around mental health issues<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Don\u2019t trust your immediate thoughts.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-and-depression.htm\">Depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> involve\u00a0<strong>a tendency toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; thoughts that seem logic at the time, but are out of line with reality.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18690\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8079374918_4df64acbdf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18690\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8079374918_4df64acbdf-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"depression stigma\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8079374918_4df64acbdf-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8079374918_4df64acbdf.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/yjeon\/8079374918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">YJ Jeon<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>And any experience that leaves us feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed <\/a>or belittled (and stigma definitely does both)<\/strong> can throw us\u00a0into the worst of such distortions.<\/p>\n<p>This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">extreme thinking<\/a>, revenge thoughts, and doom thoughts. At worse these thoughts will be tempting you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">self-harm<\/a> or even leave you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-suicide.htm\">suicidal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question each thought you have no matter how creative or logical it seems in the moment.<\/strong>\u00a0If you were feeling good in this moment, would you be having these thoughts?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Get busy doing something else. Now.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Remind yourself that whatever you feel like doing in this moment can wait a day. This isn&#8217;t about not defending yourself. It&#8217;s about recognising that when you are depressed or anxious you are vulnerable and\/or prone to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsivity <\/a>and doing things you later regret. Your priority has to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">good self-care<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>So don\u2019t send the person a ranting email about how ignorant they are, or declaring you never want to see them again, or send 100 articles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-support-someone-with-mental-health-problems.htm\">how to handle depressed people<\/a>. And definitely don\u2019t contact everyone you both know to \u2018set the record straight\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead, try something like the following<\/strong> to delay taking action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>change environments (even if it\u2019s just a fake toilet break)<\/li>\n<li>start a physical task that requires full attention<\/li>\n<li>engage in a banal conversation with someone you don&#8217;t know too well<\/li>\n<li>blast music and sing along (dance along too, even better)<\/li>\n<li>go for a walk and practice deep breathing as you go<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/urban-stress-10-tips-to-cope.htm\">get out into nature<\/a> (now evidence-based as helpful for stress)<\/li>\n<li>do<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\"> any form of exercise<\/a> \u2013 it not only distracts you but it counters the very real physical symptoms of stress and anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Reach out to one person who does understand.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_18692\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9266382_a7ea117bb7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18692\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9266382_a7ea117bb7-400x330.jpg\" alt=\"anxiety and depression stigma\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9266382_a7ea117bb7-400x330.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9266382_a7ea117bb7.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/basykes\/9266382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Bev Sykes<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>One person, not calling everyone in your phone and talking for hours.<\/strong> Stigma is horrible. But making a drama out of this will make you feel worse and not better, and the idea is to practise extreme self-care right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose a person you know is safe for you and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trust.htm\"> you can trust <\/a>and<\/strong> who understands your mental health issue well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don\u2019t have someone like this available in your life, call a hotline. <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It doesn\u2019t make you weird or crazy to use a mental health hotline. It just makes you a human having a temporary hard time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the UK, you can call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/\">the Good Samaritans<\/a>. Also consider online forums for depression and anxiety where other people who have been through what you have will rally about you.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Let as much time pass as you can bear to.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong> In a few days, the world might feel a better place. You might be having a<\/strong> better day and feeling stronger (or not. That\u2019s okay, too). That person might still not understand your upset, or might still judge you, but you might not care as much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s also possible that that person who belittled you was acting from fear, and will experience a change of heart.<\/strong> They might have gone and done some research about mental health.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Don\u2019t have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">expectations<\/a>, but know that you can\u2019t predict future. If you react immediately to anxiety and depression stigma, life and other people have no room to surprise you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Don&#8217;t talk to him or her if you don\u2019t want to.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Many people who experience mental health issues are very sensitive, caring people<\/strong> who worry about hurting other people\u2019s feelings and doing the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>But if the idea of talking to the person who judged your mental health makes you feel very stressed, it\u2019s just not worth it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">You don\u2019t owe anyone an explanation until you are ready, and you don\u2019t owe anyone an education. It&#8217;s not your job to set the record straight on mental health. But you do owe yourself a fighting chance to keep going the best way you can.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Of course if you experience mental health stigma at work, it&#8217;s a different situation.<\/strong> In this case try to talk only about work issues, and avoid them as possible.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Embrace the power of statistics when it comes to mental health stigma.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_18691\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18691\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18691\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14496866427_81258809e9-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"depression stigma\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14496866427_81258809e9-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14496866427_81258809e9.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14496866427_81258809e9-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pabak\/14496866427\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Pabak Sarkar<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s 2017. <strong>It&#8217;s now common knowledge that things like anxiety and depression are normal<\/strong> &#8211; around 20% of us here in the UK suffer at any given time, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/statistics\/mental-health-statistics-depression\">England&#8217;s mental health organisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The NHS&#8217; mental health task force seconded this recently, estimating that one in four of us experiences a mental health issue each year.<\/strong> And the government is <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/health\/spending-mental-health-services\/\">looking to invest 11.7 billion into mental health care this year.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even the royal family are talking about mental health issues nowadays.<\/strong> Take comfort in the fact that the other person is the weirdo here, for not\u00a0understanding mental health concerns.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Respond only if and when you are ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When time has passed and you are feeling calm,<\/strong> and you&#8217;d like to share with the other person how you felt about their judgements about your mental health, it&#8217;s of course well within your rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s an idea to practice what you plan to say<\/strong> with that trusted friend, just to be sure that you are not about to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\"> self-sabotage<\/a> and upset yourself. And emails can be an easier option, meaning you can include links to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">useful information about depression<\/a> and anxiety.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Seek professional support if you haven\u2019t already.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Feeling shamed about your mental health can trigger old issues<\/strong>. If you were in therapy but haven&#8217;t been lately, and this experience leaves you feeling spiralling or out-of-control in a way that worsens or doesn&#8217;t change after several weeks, reach out for support.<\/p>\n<h2>What if it&#8217;s at work and the mental health stigma comes from my boss?<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s a hard situation to be in, but it is discrimination and you do have rights. \u00a0Learn more about these rights at the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.time-to-change.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK charity Time to Change.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Need to talk to someone about depression and\/or anxiety?
