They arose as a response to the then popular psychodynamic school of thought, which\u00a0focuses on looking back into the past to find your unconscious drives and hidden emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cognitive approach came along and suggested that we look at the power of our mental processes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>How do you perceive your life? How is the way you interpret your experiences determining the life you are creating?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive therapies look at the way your thoughts and feelings affect your behaviour, and how you can better cope and problem solve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Therapies that use the cognitive approach<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> helps you see the way your thoughts and feelings are determining your unhelpful behaviours. By changing this cycle, you can solve your problems and improve your moods. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A popular short-term and structured psychotherapy recommended by the NHS, CBT doesn\u2019t tend to look at your past but uses your current situation to work from. It does involve &#8216;homework&#8217;. You will find that you feel less distressed, your negative thinking is lessened, and your physical symptoms of stress reduced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EMDR assists you with:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/li>\n<li>childhood abuse and sexual abuse<\/li>\n<li>anxiety and depression<\/li>\n<li>anger issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Schema Therapy<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">Schema therapy<\/a> helps you identify and change your self-defeating ways of perceiving yourself and others that leave you feeling like your life is stuck on repeat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once again a therapy created for those whom other forms of talk therapy couldn\u2019t help, schema therapy does help you look at your childhood to understand why you behave the way you do. By helping you see the ways you&#8217;ve already managed in life, your therapist helps you uncover the skills and strengths you already have. Together you then work out how you can use those tools to now set goals and move toward a life that you want for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SFBT can assist you with things like:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fear of change<\/li>\n<li>lack of confidence<\/li>\n<li>goal setting<\/li>\n<li>depression<\/li>\n<li>parenting problems<\/li>\n<li>eating disorders<\/li>\n<li>relationship issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>REBT believes that we are not actually emotionally affected by events and people outside of ourselves, but by our thoughts and feelings about such things, which we have the power to control and change.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rational emotive behaviour therapy is really the oldest of the cognitive therapies, developed by well-respected psychologist Albert Ellis in the 1950s.\u00a0 REBT teaches you a psychological model of \u201cA-B-C-D-E-F\u2019 to deal with stressful experiences. The idea is that the \u2018activating event\u2019 (A) that upset you causes beliefs (B) that then cause you to act in certain ways that lead to negative consequences (C.
