Darcy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>When it comes to anxiety vs depression, <\/b>there are a lot of similarities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both anxiety and depression can:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">distorted thinking<\/a><\/li>\n<li>leave you feeling hopeless and out-of-control<\/li>\n<li>can see you uninterested in your usual hobbies and activities<\/li>\n<li>can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">sleep problems<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burnout-symptoms-treatment-tips.htm\">burnout<\/a><\/li>\n<li>and can leave you feeling unable to cope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>So how can you tell the difference when there is so much crossover?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What is anxiety?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is not just stress<\/strong> (read the difference in our related article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress vs anxiety<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Anxiety involves an ongoing sense of unease or fear, and out-of-control stressful thoughts. These symptoms will leave you feeling powerless, and make daily life more difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Thoughts produced by anxiety are negative, <\/strong>and often dramatic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black-and-white thinking<\/a>, or tinged with doom and gloom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxious thoughts are also often future-based.<\/strong> Even if they are about something that has already happened, the anxiety will be over what will now take place because of it, i.e., he or she will think bad things, I will lose my job, my life will be ruined, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety triggers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight and flight response<\/a>, which releases a<\/strong> cocktail of chemicals into your blood, including cortisol. (Read our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">the difference between sadness and depression <\/a>for more on this.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some people become very emotional, whereas others feel numb.<\/strong> Some people might act out by things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">binge drinking,<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">picking fights with those they love<\/a>, while others might become very passive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But the main things to look for with depression are feeling increasingly unable to feel joy or contentment , feeling constantly bad about yourself, and losing interest in the things that once mattered to you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Your thoughts will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-distortions-cbt.htm\">negative, distorted<\/a>, and<\/strong> include doom and gloom. They might even be self-destructive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your thoughts will often be past-based. Depression thrives on dwelling on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\">the things we cannot change<\/a>, in ways that make us feel<\/strong> hopeless, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilty<\/a>, and worthless.<\/p>\n<p>Energy wise, some some find they manage to continue on despite feeling empty inside, referred to as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">walking depression<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But many find depression leaves them feeling drained.<\/strong>\u00a0As for thinking, it can feel like your brain is full of cotton wool.<\/p>\n<p>Depression also has physical symptoms, which tend to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a><\/li>\n<li>feeling weak in your body<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a> or a change in sleep patterns<\/li>\n<li>possible ongoing flus and colds<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">unexplained medical symptoms<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">a change in appetite<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[For a complete breakdown of depression and its symptoms, please see our comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Depression<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">anxiety vs depression\u00a0 &#8211; the differences<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_33480\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33480\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/542940558_d6c1177ff2-400x269.jpg\" alt=\"anxiety vs depression\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/542940558_d6c1177ff2-400x269.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/542940558_d6c1177ff2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/542940558_d6c1177ff2-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chpaquette\/542940558\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Christopher Paquette<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>So let\u2019s summarise the differences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression vs anxiety looks like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tends to drain your energy <strong>vs.<\/strong><em>\u00a0can put you on a cycle of buzzy highs and then lows.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Makes it hard to think <strong>vs.<\/strong> <em>can leave you overthinking about the wrong things.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Can see you having self destructive thoughts <strong>vs<\/strong> <em>leaves you having illogical thoughts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tends to be more past-based <strong>vs.<\/strong> <em>tends to be more future-focused.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Is more prone to leave you feeling sad and guilty vs. <em>is more prone to leave you feeling fearful, paranoid, and\/or panicky.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Often it\u2019s the physical symptoms that mark the clearest difference when it comes to depression vs anxiety<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a racing heart and feeling edgy tend to be anxiety, whereas feeling really tired and listless all the time tends to be depression.<\/p>\n<p><em>And yet, if you are worried about the future which you are sure you will be terrible and then feel hopeless, are you depressed, or anxious?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The answer is that you might be both.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Can you be both anxious and depressed at the same time?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It\u2019s entirely possible to have symptoms of anxiety and depression at the same time, or what is called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-comorbidity.htm\">comorbidity<\/a>\u2019 in psychology.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the thing \u2013 many people seem to have experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\">anxiety disorder<\/a> before developing depression, <\/strong>and continue to have anxious thinking while they are depressed.\u00a0So while there is no study that \u2018proves\u2019 anxiety causes depression, it is seen as a leading symptom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why it\u2019s important to take your anxiety seriously<\/strong>.
