This can feel good at first, like &#8216;Christmas spirit&#8217;. But we soon feel lost without our routine, as can our kids and partner. Soon we are faced with a household awash with holiday stress and disagreements.<\/p>\n<p><em>SOLUTION: Plan some &#8216;me time&#8217; into your diary to do the routine things that you know keep your wellbeing intact, such as your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dance class<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditation time<\/a>. And talk to the family about what routines need to be kept up except for Christmas itself, such as bedtimes and not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/screen-time-recommendations.htm\">too much screen time<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Issue #2 &#8211; Old Roles Again. Feeling put back in the box?<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"\u6709\u627e\u5230\u55ce?!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/14064991@N04\/3876769226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2476\/3876769226_0341d40c07.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas stress\" width=\"455\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><strong>Tell yourself every year you won&#8217;t have a<\/strong> temper tantrum when your now elderly mother picks on you like usual? And yet there you are, going off as usual?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another big cause of<\/strong> holiday stress is that we get put back into the &#8216;box&#8217; of our old family roles.\u00a0 All of our growth and maturity is overlooked as old patterns of behaviour are expected or thrust upon us.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SOLUTION:<\/strong> First of all, cut yourself some slack. It&#8217;s normal to revert to old roles when around family. It doesn&#8217;t make you a bad adult or person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> If there&#8217;s still time, consider a change of landscape this year. If you are always all going back to the family home, it might be interesting to try renting a cottage this year, with a new environment shifting old roles.\u00a0<\/em><em>And come prepared this year, read our tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communicating under stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">dealing with conflict<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Issue # 3 &#8211; Can&#8217;t get off memory lane?<\/h3>\n<p>As we grow older, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/christmas-blues.htm\">Christmas<\/a> can increasingly becomes a season of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nostalgia-good-or-bad.htm\">nostalgia<\/a>. This can leave us spiralling into poignant memories, especially memories of absence and separation and &#8216;what ifs&#8217;. Which can leave the present looking not so savoury.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SOLUTION:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-and-therapy.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> can do wonders because it&#8217;s focus is to bring us into the present. Try a two-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness break<\/a> whenever you find yourself wondering off.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And do consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\">gratitude practice<\/a>, if not least as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">being grateful works wonders on our moods<\/a>. Remember to do it by attaching it to a non-negotiable habit like teeth brushing, thinking of five things you are grateful for here and now as you brush.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><b><a title=\"...and go (cc)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/45409431@N00\/5319264476\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"...and go (cc)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5048\/5319264476_f1a9bb9fe3_b.jpg\" alt=\"Stress and anxiety\" width=\"456\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><\/b>Issue #4 &#8211; Loss and holiday stress.<\/h3>\n<p>For some, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/holiday-anxiety.htm\">the holidays<\/a> can be a time of acute loss if we&#8217;ve suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>. Granting yourself permission to mourn or \u201cre-mourn\u201d (for grief ebbs and flows rather than arriving in numbered stages) may be an unhappy, but essential, element of Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SOLUTION:<\/strong> Try not to choose to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-christmas-alone-how-to-cope.htm\">always alone<\/a>, even if you are convinced this suits you better. Sometimes being around others who might need our help in the here and now shifts us out of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-depression-during-the-holidays.htm\">sadness<\/a>, even if just for a few hours.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Issue # 5 &#8211; Loneliness, oh loneliness&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Not everyone has a family to be with or a partner to share the season with. And even if we do<\/strong> we can find ourselves<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\"> feeling misunderstood<\/a> and disconnected this time of year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SOLUTION:<\/strong> Keep busy. Although usually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/avoidance-coping-depression.htm\">avoidance is a negative coping mechanism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/holiday-hump-stress.htm\">the festive season<\/a> can be a rare exception. Consider volunteering, one of the best ways to meet people who share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">positive values<\/a> with you that is shown to raise our moods.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisis.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.crisis.org.uk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/caringinbristol.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.caringatchristmas.org.uk<\/a> are just two of the organisations that seek volunteers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-you-be-selfish-and-still-be-a-good-person.htm\">be a little selfish<\/a>. When we are mired in<\/strong> loneliness it is not the time to put others needs before our own.\u00a0 If you are asked round to someone&#8217;s for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-navigate-christmas-dinner.htm\">Christmas dinner<\/a> and you think being around their happy family will make you feel worse, then don&#8217;t feel you have to say yes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Merry Christmas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/14516334@N00\/4202469533\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Merry Christmas\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2552\/4202469533_877b054fb5.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas Stress\" width=\"284\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/strong> <em><strong>If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-pet.htm\">pets really make you feel better<\/a>, conside<\/strong>r a holiday housesit, it&#8217;s a time of year when many people are desperate for a pet nanny.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Issue # 6 &#8211; Money, honey.<\/h3>\n<p>Not only can we overspend then feel panicky, spiralling into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-costs-debt-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-costs-debt-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> about<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-costs-debt-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> debt?<\/a> We can feel upset and ashamed if others in our family have more to spend then we do, or guilty if we can&#8217;t get our children as much as they want.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>SOLUTION:<\/strong> For starters, communicate. Sometimes if one person is brave enough to suggest that everyone put a limit on gifts it can be met with great relief.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Then make a plan and stick to it.<\/strong> Plan what you are going to buy, where you might pick it up, and exactly how much you will spend, saving you from impulse shopping.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Christmas stress too much this year?
