Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emotional shock hits all of us<\/strong> at one point or another. It&#8217;s in those moments after we live through something hard or challenging. We keep rationalising what happened, and telling ourselves to just &#8216;get over it&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><em>But we can&#8217;t snap out of feeling strange and unsettled, no matter how hard we try.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What is &#8217;emotional shock&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is not actually a clinical diagnosis,<\/strong> but just a popular term. That said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">mental health professionals<\/a> may use the term to help you understand your overwhelmed state after a difficult event.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And it&#8217;s not &#8216;bad&#8217;. Emotional shock is actually your mind and body&#8217;s normal and healthy <\/strong>way of processing difficult experiences. As the NHS says in their guide &#8216;<em>Understanding Reactions to Traumatic Events&#8217;<\/em>, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">&#8220;After experiencing or witnessing a frightening or traumatic event, it is common for people to experience strong physical feelings and emotions and\/or to find that they are behaving differently. This may happen straight away or for some people it may be several weeks or months later that reactions occur. These are normal and for the majority of people they start to fade and settle down within a few months.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>The problem arises if emotional shock triggers<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">previous life trauma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a> we already struggled with, or if it evolves into a more serious mental health issue. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7 Signs you are suffering emotional shock<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. You feel afraid.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Something has happened that you didn&#8217;t expect, weren&#8217;t prepared for, and couldn&#8217;t prevent happening. Suddenly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">life feels dangerous<\/a> and unpredictable. You can&#8217;t think straight<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>You might feel as if your brain has turned to mush<\/strong>, or you have &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">brain fog<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>Life might even feel unreal, as if you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">disconnected and floating slightly outside of your body<\/a>, watching yourself carry on doing things.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. You are experiencing physical side effects. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When your brain decides that there is &#8216;danger&#8217; around, it triggers the<\/strong> primal &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight, flight, or freeze&#8217; response<\/a>. This sends a cocktail of chemicals and hormones through your body that can manifest as things like a racing heartbeat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle tension<\/a>, headaches, stomach upset, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">random aches and pains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. You feel strangely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">Sleep<\/a> is often affected when we experience stressful things. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Insomnia<\/a> is common. Although for some people stress makes them sleep more than ever, even if might be a disturbed sleep, full of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dream-analysis-therapy-counselling.htm\">dreams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. You are all over the place.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">When the mind is struggling to make sense of a difficult situation, it doesn&#8217;t leave much headspace to deal with everything else that needs our attention.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The stress of a shock can also leave us illogic and emotional.<\/strong> In one moment we think, \u201cI am bigger than this\u201d, and we feel powerful. In the next we are lost to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">victim thinking<\/a>, feeling sorry for ourselves and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">crying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There can also be a cycle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> (it&#8217;s all my fault), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame <\/a>(what will people think), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame<\/a> (I hate them for doing this to me).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">6. If you are usually social, you might just want to be alone and hide out at home. Or if you are often the sort to take time out by yourself and be practical, you might find yourself going out every night, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">drinking<\/a> when you usually don&#8217;t. Compulsive behaviours can also be a problem.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">7. Things just seem, well&#8230;. pointless. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When something happens that leaves us deeply upset, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">life can temporarily lose its meaning<\/a>. We can have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> like, &#8216;Why bother, when everything is just going to go wrong?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>When will my emotional shock stop?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/time_is_relevant-e1390227195135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4521 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/time_is_relevant-e1390227195135.jpg\" alt=\"post traumatic stress disorder\" width=\"427\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/time_is_relevant-e1390227195135.jpg 637w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/time_is_relevant-e1390227195135-400x237.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/time_is_relevant-e1390227195135-500x297.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-a-traumatic-experience-do-to-your-body-and-brain.htm\">Traumatic experiences<\/a> will interact with your personal vulnerabilities and the any unresolved difficult experiences in your past.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">This means you will have your own unique timeline for getting over shock. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If, for example, you already<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/made-redundant-covid-19.htm\"> lost your job<\/a> this year, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">have had an accident that left you injured<\/a>, you might take more time to feel better than someone who just had an injury.<\/p>\n<p><b>So some people recover from emotional shock in several hours. Others in several days, <\/b>and some in several weeks. And for some, depending on what they go through, shock can even go on for six weeks or more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that it is also possible to experience &#8216;delayed&#8217; emotional shock. <\/strong>So you might think an event has not upset you, only to feel symptoms days or weeks later.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s months later and I STILL feel bad<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is it months after the fact, and you still are having symptoms <\/strong>like the above?\u00a0It&#8217;s possible that you have developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">acute stress disorder<\/a> or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/ptsd-asd-help-guide.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>. Is it possible I am living in a state of endless psychological shock?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some individuals lead their life in a sort of &#8216;extended shock&#8217; after <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">traumatic childhood experiences.<\/a> Or because their childhood was full of difficulties, called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences<\/a>&#8216;, or ACEs, in psychology.<\/p>\n<p>As adults they might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">constantly anxious<\/a>, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>, feel<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-relationships-and-love.htm\"> unable to have close relationships<\/a>, or even exhibit signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adult ADHD<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">extreme distraction<\/a> and an inability to think clearly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This sort of &#8216;long-term shock&#8217; is now starting to be be diagnosed as its own form of<\/strong> PTSD, called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\"> complex PTSD<\/a>, or &#8216;c-PTSD&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you think this is you, do seek support.<\/strong> Working with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist <\/a>can help you gently and carefully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">uncover your past trauma<\/a>, while learning how to lessen its control over your life.<\/p>\n<p>[Read more in our article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">What therapies work for trauma?<\/a>&#8220;].<\/p>\n<h2>Be gentle with yourself<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The important thing with psychological shock is to be gentle with yourself and not judge yourself.<\/strong> There is not a &#8216;right&#8217; or &#8216;wrong&#8217; way to respond to traumatic events, and again, we all get better within our own timeline.
