Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We all lose steam now and then.<\/p>\n<p><em>But when does having no motivation go from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\">mental time-out<\/a>, to a serious issue that needs your attention?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What is low motivation?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Motivation is when you feel driven to do things. In a very basic way, we are<\/strong> motivated to get out of bed. But we are also motivated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workaholic-symptoms.htm\">go to work<\/a>, to see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">friends<\/span><\/a>, and to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">have goals<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low motivation means we feel uninterested in doing things. We start to<\/strong> cancel social events, perhaps call in sick to work when we aren\u2019t, don\u2019t make that gym class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No motivation happens when we just don\u2019t want to do <em>anything<\/em>. We avoid our friends, stop going to the<\/strong> gym at all, go to work only if we have to, and possibly start to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self-sabotage<\/span><\/a>. We mess up the work presentation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">end relationships<\/span><\/a>, miss important meetings.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">When having no motivation is normal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lounging around the house in a tracksuit is actually normal behaviour post <\/strong>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-change.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">big life change<\/span><\/a> like a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\"> redundancy<\/a><\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anger-after-breakup.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">breakup<\/span><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bereavement<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s as if our mind needs a timeout to recuperate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s also normal during teenage years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The teenage brain<\/span> <\/a>and body are in<\/strong> flux during adolescence. And it and it can mean teenagers can feel spaced out, moody, and uninterested in such things as thinking about their future or cleaning their rooms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low motivation evidently happens when we <em>agree to do something we don\u2019t like<\/em>, or<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don\u2019t say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> no<\/span> when we want to.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"> If you took on a project at work you hate, or you agreed to plan a friend\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wedding<\/span><\/a> but really didn\u2019t want to, low motivation is your mind\u2019s way of protesting. Your energy often returns when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">get honest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ask-for-help.htm\">ask for help<\/a>, or quit the project.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_49034\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49034\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49034\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/184002239_cc46f6946e-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"No motivation\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/184002239_cc46f6946e-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/184002239_cc46f6946e.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hutchike\/184002239\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Kevin Hutchinson<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>And finally, having no motivation can also be a symptom of a physical health condition.<\/strong> This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\">chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a>, hyperthyroidism, epilepsy, and brain tumours.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">When low motivation is a GOOD thing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Low motivation can be a wakeup call. If you listen to what it\u2019s trying to tell you, it can mean you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make decisions<\/span><\/a> that leave you in a better place.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>For example, if you suddenly find you have<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/workplace-stress-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> lost all motivation at work<\/span><\/a>, it could be a sign that you need to take a good look at whether you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">living from your own values.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0It might be time to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"> assess what your career goals really are<\/a>, and how you can reach them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Going for a few sessions with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">coach or counsellor<\/span><\/a> might mean your life turns around in a way you could never have imagined before.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">When the blahs are a mental health concern<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>So when does low motivation go from a normal stage you are going through, to a mental health issue? When it has gone on for too long, and when it is jeopardising your day-to-day coping.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look for things like the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it\u2019s gone on for six weeks or more<\/li>\n<li>it is worsening or unchanged<\/li>\n<li>you are losing interest in talking to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> friends<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">family<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>your low motivation is accompanied by increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">negative thinking<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>you are having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-help-someone-suicidal.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>you aren\u2019t sure anymore why you lack motivation (or there was no trigger).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Mental health issues and disorders connected to low motivation<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If you are trying every tip you can find on the internet about getting motivated but it\u2019s just not working? It could be you have an underlying mental health issue or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">mental disorder<\/a> that needs attention.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_49037\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4402084592_ff3ff9b692.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49037\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4402084592_ff3ff9b692-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"no motivation\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4402084592_ff3ff9b692-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4402084592_ff3ff9b692.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amylovesyah\/4402084592\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Amy<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">Depression<\/a> is the most common mental health issue that has low motivation as a symptom.<\/strong> The onset of low motivation is for many long-term depression sufferers a sign they are falling into another cycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Read our comprehensive &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Guide to Depression&#8217;<\/span><\/a> for more on its symptoms.]<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other mental health issues that involve low motivation include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">acute stress reaction<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What do I do if it\u2019s a loved one with low motivation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your loved one is diagnosed with any of the mental health issues above, trying to <\/strong>push them to do things might be counterproductive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work to accept them as they are, and do not<\/strong> call them lazy. They are not. They are currently unwell, and need your patience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some encouragement is of course fine, but if they say no, do not<\/strong> make them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feel guilty<\/span><\/a> or flawed. They are likely doing the best they can. And what seems to you like just a bit of cajoling might feel to them, in their sensitive state, like a lot of pressure. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">Focus on small steps<\/a>, keep your eye on the future, and try to remain as positive as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your loved one does not have the support they need,<\/strong> approach any suggestion they seek it with care (read our article on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/tell-friend-loved-one-need-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Telling a Loved One They Need Counselling<\/span><\/a>&#8221; for good advice here).<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And if it\u2019s me who has no motivation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your low motivation has an obvious trigger like a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">life change<\/span><\/a> or career issue, self-help can be a good start. If your low motivation feels unmanageable, or has been going on for longer than you are comfortable with, consider talking to a coach or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">counsellor<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If your low motivation has been going on for months or even years, if you struggle in all areas of life because of it? And don\u2019t understand what causes it but can\u2019t seem to push past it?
