Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes it can feel like your parents just don&#8217;t live in the same reality.<\/strong> You are changing, but they still treat you as the kid they knew. Or you have all new challenges and problems they seem to know nothing about.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333399;\">How to talk to your parents about mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So how on earth can you then talk to them if you are suffering from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depression<\/span><\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eating disorder<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0or any other mental health issue, and want their help to get to a counsellor?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">First things first \u2013 be proud of yourself for asking for help.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We all, at certain times in our life, need help. Asking for it is really courageous and takes inner strength. You are on the right track.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Be sure you are asking the right person for help.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some parents have their own problems and mental health issues to deal with. And sadly, sometimes parents are even the reason you need help in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If you need counselling because your parent has been physically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotionally<\/span><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sexually abusive<\/span> <\/a>to you, or if you have a reason to believe your parent might hurt or punish you for wanting help, do not put yourself in danger by asking them. Turn to a school counsellor, another trusted family member or family friend, or even talk to your GP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>TIP:<\/strong> You can also contact\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childline.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Childline<\/span><\/a> here in the UK and they can guide you with other places to seek help, or advise you on whether or not it&#8217;s a good idea to talk to your parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Get your timing right.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_49301\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7994896846_8417ac763d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49301\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7994896846_8417ac763d-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"talking to your parents \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7994896846_8417ac763d-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7994896846_8417ac763d.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7994896846_8417ac763d-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mmorgan8186\/7994896846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Mark Morgan<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Asking your parents for help is best done when they are relaxed and have proper time to talk.<\/strong> If you aren\u2019t sure, just ask them. \u201cIs this an ok time to talk to you about something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP: <\/strong>If it feels more relaxing for you, consider talking as you do an activity together, such as walking the dog, doing the dishes, or making dinner together.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Preparation is everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The problem with difficult conversations is that our nerves mean we end up talking about something else entirely, or say things we regret.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The best way around this is to prepare for<\/strong> the conversation in advance.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Plan in advance what the main facts are.<\/strong> \u201cI am feeling depressed, it\u2019s been going on for about six months, and I really want to see a counsellor\u201d<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t be vague, give real detail. <\/strong>&#8220;I feel anxious in class, I\u2019m struggling to sleep, and I am having gloomy thoughts about myself and the world\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Also give detail on what you need support for and how it can benefit you.<\/strong> So not just , &#8220;I want to feel better&#8221;, but &#8220;I need help controlling my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">negative thoughts<\/span> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">raising my self-esteem<\/span> <\/a>so I can do better at school and not ruin my chance at university.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have information ready that can help your parents.\u00a0<\/strong>Printouts or links to sites about teenage mental health, or even a list of counsellors you&#8217;d like to try.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Practise the conversation in advance with a friend if they are in the know, if not even in a mirror.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Don&#8217;t play the blame game.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The moment we turn a conversation toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blame<\/span><\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">judgement<\/span><\/a> we are encouraging the other person to shut down and become defensive. This takes us away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">achieving our goal.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_49302\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4070951428_88f2c72fe3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49302\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4070951428_88f2c72fe3-400x320.jpg\" alt=\"how to talk to parents\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4070951428_88f2c72fe3-400x320.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4070951428_88f2c72fe3.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/12675847@N07\/4070951428\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Sine Botchen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Consider starting the conversation with some positives, or some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">gratitude<\/span><\/a> about their parenting so they know you are not trying to blame them<\/strong>. \u201cI know you want the best for me, and you always have done your best to take care of me, and I appreciate it.\u201d Of course be honest here, flattery never gets you far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep all statements as \u201cI\u201d statements, not starting with &#8216;You&#8217;.<\/strong> The second you start using \u2018you this, you that\u2019, you have gone into blame and attack.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>TIP:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Don\u2019t set one parent against the other. It\u2019s okay to ask if they agree with each other, but don\u2019t ask one person to side with you. So more, &#8220;Do you guys agree or disagree on that?&#8221; and less, &#8220;Dad, how can you let her say that?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Look for help, not understanding.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> If you start getting caught up in explaining or understanding yourself the conversation will go nowhere. Focus on your goal, which is to get help. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Remember, a trained counsellor or psychotherapist will understand all you are going through even if your parents don&#8217;t. And they can help you with the best ways to share and navigate your parents in the future. So keep your focus on getting their help to see a counsellor.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> If you parents start going on about everything else but help, use \u2018the broken record technique\u2019. This means rephrasing the same thing again and again, in slightly different variations, for example:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cI don\u2019t understand what I did wrong as a parent.\u201d Okay, Mum, but right now I just need you to help me get to a counsellor. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cBut why are you depressed, what is this about?\u201d Well I need to figure that out. So I need your help getting some counselling.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cAre you sure you want counselling?\u201d Yes, I\u2019m sure. Can you please help me with the funding for it?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Give them time.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Remember, your parents might not really have any previous experience of what you are sharing with them.<\/strong> It might be less that they don\u2019t want to help you, and more that they are just a bit lost as to what to do or say just yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So don\u2019t expect a perfect answer or reaction. <\/strong>Expect them to need time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong>\u00a0Give your parents a timeline or even deadline, such as saying, \u2018I know it is probably something you need time to think about, so maybe you can think about what I\u2019ve just told you, and we can talk again in a week or so? Like perhaps next Saturday over lunch?\u2019. This can be better then just leaving it hanging and always feeling on edge about when to bring it up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>In the UK and want to talk to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/adolescent-teenager-counselling-london.htm#book-therapist-section\">experienced counsellor who works with teens<\/a>?
