Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Set the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-new-you-try-this.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">New Year goals<\/span><\/a> every year, and every year it&#8217;s a blowout?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5 Steps to making your New Year goals a success this time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Often, without realising it, we are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\"> setting ourselves up to fail with your goals<\/a>. But there are steps we can take to turn it around this New Year.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Change the charge.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/5-reasons-your-new-years-resolutions-never-work.htm\">new years resolutions<\/a>\u00a0are negative, or come with built-in judgement systems. They sound like, &#8216;I&#8217;m going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lose weight&#8217;<\/span><\/a> (I\u2019m too fat), &#8216;I&#8217;ll quit smoking&#8217; (I have no willpower), &#8216;this year I&#8217;ll finally find a better job&#8217; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">I\u2019m undervalued<\/a> at work and complacent).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem is that nobody is inspired by dreary things that<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-wrong-with-me.htm\">make us feel bad about ourselves<\/a> or point out what we perceive as our flaws.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Turn the charge of your resolution around by looking for the BENEFIT it would bring to your life if you achieved it, and <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make that your goal<\/span><\/a><\/span> instead.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lose weight becomes \u2018feel healthy and energised\u2019<\/li>\n<li>quit smoking becomes \u2018being able to breathe deeply and go running\u2019<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">find a better job<\/a> becomes \u2018work in an environment where my talents shine\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Find the benefit that works for you personally.\u00a0When you think about your <\/strong>rephrased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/5-reasons-your-new-years-resolutions-never-work.htm\">resolution<\/a>, it should feel good instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. They are<\/strong> too much for us to take on without panic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The human brain is designed to scan for and avoid danger. And it often<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> sees modern-day stress as danger<\/span><\/a>. In other words, you are designed to avoid things that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> feel too stressful<\/span><\/a>. The moment you choose a N<\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">ew Year goals that feels really big, you are writing up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\">your own failure<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So break the proverbial mountain you&#8217;ve decided to climb into boulders, then rocks, then gravel. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, the mountain of losing weight could break down <\/strong>into the &#8216;boulders&#8217; of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">changing your mindset around food<\/a>, starting to learn about health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>, finding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise you love doing<\/a>, and getting help if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">binge eating disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking the first one, changing your mindset, this &#8216;rock&#8217; can involve<\/strong> getting some books, taking a course, or joining an healthy eating group. To get those books, that means researching the books, deciding what ones you want, and then ordering them. So the &#8216;gravel&#8217; is to spend an hour researching books.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Get the feeling of success now, not in six months, to reach those New Year goals this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"> secret of making goals happen<\/a> is to get a taste of success as soon as possible. <\/strong>So\u00a0once you have that easy &#8216;gravel&#8217; goal, <em>do it today or soon.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Then take all the other small steps you came up with and <\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>schedule each one into your diary and make each step as important<\/em><em> as any other scheduled thing.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Isn&#8217;t finally feeling good in your life which <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">improves your mental health<\/a> as important as, say,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\"> seeing a doctor<\/a> for your physical health?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_52219\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52219\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3156130202_55bd70674d-400x282.jpg\" alt=\"new year goals\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3156130202_55bd70674d-400x282.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3156130202_55bd70674d.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tourist_on_earth\/3156130202\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">tourist_on_earth<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ideally, one small action a step a day, at least Monday to Friday, is the way forward.<\/strong> Even one phone call is a coup, and keeps you in the energy of success.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Record everything and reward yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>We feel successful when we remember to pat ourselves on the back.<\/strong> And yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">time can go so quickly<\/a>, we can forget all the small steps we put time into, and forget how far we&#8217;ve come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So take the time to record every small achievement in a designated journal<\/strong> you can look over when losing incentive. And each time you achieve a certain amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">steps towards your goal<\/a> celebrate, whether that is by going out for dinner or buying some nice bath salts for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not overlook this &#8216;reward&#8217; step as it&#8217;s actually a brain hack.<\/strong> The brain is designed to continue things that it feels rewarded for. For example, it releases the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine to give us a &#8216;feel good&#8217; sensation so that we will continue things it sees as essential to survival, like eating. (Although unfortunately our brain didn&#8217;t evolve with the times, and doesn&#8217;t realise that a pile of junk food is non essential). Regardless, when it starts to realise something leads to rewards, we are more likely to continue.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Expand the time container.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Most of us grossly underestimate<\/strong> how much time a goal will take. Then are hard on ourselves when we don&#8217;t meet what is a totally unrealistic timeline. But picking a realistic timeframe is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-goals.htm\">good SMART goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So a simple trick is to <em>double your timeline or &#8216;time container&#8217;.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have decided you will quit smoking by your birthday in a few months, give yourself six months. If you\u2019ve decided to be in a bikini by summer, decide to be in a bikini for a trip away in the autumn.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Yes, you might achieve your goal before you think. But if you stress yourself out with a short timeline, your <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unconscious mind<\/span> <\/a>is far more likely to decide it\u2019s too much and simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">sabotage<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not sure what timeline works? Here\u2019s a simple trick<\/strong> \u2013 use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mindfulness<\/span>.<\/a> Find a quiet private place, practise deep, focussed breathing until you feel settled into your body. Then think of the new timeline you have in mind. Do you feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">tension in your body<\/a>? A clenching in your jaw or stomach? Try adding a few months. Keep going until you reach a timeline that feels good.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">[Never tried mindfulness?
