His decision to move away from the idea that the therapist was the &#8216;expert&#8217; made person-centred therapy an extremely radical approach for its time (1940s-1960s).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The person-centred approach instead proposes that each person is essentially the expert on her or himself.\u00a0<\/strong>We all have\u00a0a built-in tendency to \u2018self-actualise\u2019&#8211; to search for, and become, the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-self.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authentic<\/span><\/a> and empowered version of yourself.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The therapist&#8217;s role becomes to create a relationship where you feel safe and free. Free to drop the false fronts and roles you play in life, and free to begin to explore what waits behind the masks you present to the world.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Important Benefits of Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>So what would be the benefit of this sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-therapeutic-alliance.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">therapeutic relationship<\/span><\/a>,<\/strong> where your therapist creates a safe environment and supports you in finding your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inner resources<\/span><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>In his thirty years of practice, Carl Rogers observed the\u00a0following four benefits of therapy<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in successful case studies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Increased openness to experience.<\/li>\n<li>Greater self-trust.<\/li>\n<li>A growing internal locus of validation.<\/li>\n<li>Process mindset vs fixed mindset.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Sounds interesting,\u00a0 but what do these terms actually mean, and how might they relate to you? <\/strong>Read on.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Openness to Experience<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Are your negative past experiences determining your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perspective<\/span><\/a>?<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52238\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5161271699_ea2346eb20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52238\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5161271699_ea2346eb20-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Benefits of therapy \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5161271699_ea2346eb20-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5161271699_ea2346eb20.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5161271699_ea2346eb20-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/augustbrill\/5161271699\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">August Brill<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Psychological research shows that <strong>most of the time, we don\u2019t actually see what\u2019s in front of us. Instead, we see <\/strong><em>what we\u2019re looking for in a situation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a famous experiment, researchers asked participants to\u00a0<\/strong>count how many times players wearing white pass a basketball. Shockingly, over half of the participants in the study failed to notice a person in a gorilla suit walking into the middle of the scene and thumping its chest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experiments like this demonstrate that our past conditioning can shape what we see in the present.<\/strong> And if your past experiences have been particularly negative? This can give you a distorted and irrational point of view, which can affect your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">relationships<\/span><\/a> and ability to progress in life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><em>Therapy helps you let go of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">negative past experiences<\/span><\/a>, so you can start to see the world through a more accurate, rational and empowering lens. You become more open to both experiences and opportunities.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Greater Self-Trust<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Do you trust your own intuition, or are you led by what others around you are thinking and doing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The psychological phenomenon of \u2018group think\u2019 suggests that the environments around us guide many of the decisions we make<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We evolved in tribes, where we had to look to those around us to guide our decisions to survive. It enabled the group to react quickly and efficiently to opportunities and threats in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers pointed out that this phenomenon is not helpful for the self-actualisation process. But <strong>he noticed that therapy helped clients to \u2018unplug\u2019 from group-think and make more rational decisions.<\/strong>\u00a0He noted that his successful clients developed an increased ability to think for themselves. They had greater self-trust in their own decision-making skills.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><em>Instead of letting others dictate your behaviour and thinking, therapy helps you learn to balance your feelings,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> impulses<\/span> <\/a>and desires with the demands of your social environment. This helps you make decisions that see you meet both your own<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-goals.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> goals<\/span><\/a> and the needs of your social groups.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">A Growing Internal Locus of Validation<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Do you look to others for approval or disapproval, or do you use your own opinion to determine if you are doing the right thing?<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52239\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5713704415_8a6973f7a2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52239\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5713704415_8a6973f7a2-361x400.jpg\" alt=\" benefits of therapy \" width=\"361\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5713704415_8a6973f7a2-361x400.jpg 361w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5713704415_8a6973f7a2.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/stoneysteiner\/5713704415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Urs Steiner<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>In the modern world, the judgements of others can dictate much of what we do. <\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Or rather, how we <em>think<\/em>\u00a0others will judge us.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">For example, when we upload a status to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a>, it\u2019s very easy to feel great if we get a lot of likes but allow ourselves to feel terrible if we don\u2019t. This is a symptom of a wider problem &#8211; we\u2019re looking to other people to validate our thinking and behaviour.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Carl Rogers noticed clients increasingly developed their own internal \u2018locus of validation\u2019. They stopped looking to sources outside themselves for approval. He said that\u00a0<strong>the most important question for an individual to ask is, \u201cAm I living in a way which is deeply satisfying to me, and which truly expresses me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><em>Therapy helps you to not get carried away by the praise or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">criticisms<\/span><\/a> of other people, because you know how to live from your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">personal values<\/span><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Willingness to be a process<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Are you able to be flexible, or do you often find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">change<\/span> <\/a>and growth hard?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The final characteristic Rogers noted in individuals who had successfully undergone therapy was that they had a \u2018process\u2019 mindset rather than a fixed one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This means you view yourself as fluid and in constant motion,<\/strong> rather than a fixed thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s normal when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/first-therapy-session-what-happens.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">start therapy<\/span> <\/a>to have an idea that we are going to<\/strong> achieve a \u2018fixed state\u2019 &#8211; a point in the future where all our problems are solved.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is this unrealistic, it\u2019s not a helpful way to live our lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If we become too fixated on exact outcomes, life, being life, will disappoint us, and we will often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feel miserable<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rogers found a good client-therapist relationship meant his clients began to accept that <strong>the goal was not to achieve a fixed state where everything was \u2018ok\u2019, but rather to accept themselves as a \u2018work in progress\u2019.<\/strong> They became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/forgive-and-forget-move-on.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more forgiving<\/span><\/a> of themselves, and more willing to accept and address their shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Therapy helps you have less of a rigid identity, and to be more adaptable to change. You can drop the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">limiting beliefs<\/span><\/a> and behaviours that no longer serve where you want to go in life.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Conclusion\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Carl Rogers&#8217; key insight was that most of us wear masks and play social roles to fit into the society around us. To a certain extent, this serves its purpose and keeps things running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>But sooner or later, instead of using these roles, these roles start to use us. They become part of a rigid identity that we hide behind.<strong> Over time, we feel cut off from who we really are \u2013 from our deepest instincts and desires as human beings.
