Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest here &#8211; if positive thinking alone could really change our lives, we wouldn\u2019t be looking at epidemic-level statistics for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">loneliness<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depression<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>But if it didn\u2019t work at all, why is the term even still around?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>It turns out the benefits of positive thinking are real \u2013 but not in the filtered down way that poorly researched self-help books and gurus will tell you.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The roots of positive psychology<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It pays to take a moment to understand how the concept of positive thinking came into being \u2013 and how misunderstood the term actually is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up until the 1950s, psychology and psychotherapy focussed exclusively on what was wrong with people. It was a \u2018disease model\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then along came the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-humanistic-approach.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">humanistic psychology movement<\/span><\/a>, led by the likes of Abraham Maslow and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-therapy-carl-rogers.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Carl Rogers<\/span><\/a>, suggesting that maybe we also needed to put just as much focus on what was <em>right<\/em> with people. It\u2019s focus was on things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">resilience<\/span><\/a>, creativity, spirituality, courage, and hope.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">So where did we go wrong?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like many a popular movement (in its heyday positive psychology was touted by the likes of the BBC, the Sunday Times, and the New York Times) <strong>people wanted to jump on the bandwagon. This led to a flurry of poorly carried out studies<\/strong> designed to declare that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/optimism-vs-pessimism.htm\">optimism<\/a> led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-happiness-really.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">happiness<\/span><\/a>. (Better executed studies have since countered most of them). And of course a spate of self-help books soon followed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Positive psychology was whittled down to just \u2018positive thinking\u2019. But that is sort of like saying that good physical health is only about eating carrots. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But the positive psychology movement never proposed we only think positive, or ignore the challenges we face and things we need to heal within ourselves. If you can\u2019t, you are responsible for any outcome, such as your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression and anxiety.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">This entirely overlooks the very real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trauma<\/span><\/a> many have experienced in life. Whereas positive psychology would champion the resilience and creativity that has seen you get to where you are today, and encourage you to find more inner resources to continue in an even more effective way, positive thinking instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shames<\/span><\/a> you and leave you feeling flawed and guilty. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And imagine if your friend really needs to<\/strong> talk to someone and you tell them rather glibly, \u2018think positive, you\u2019ll be fine.\u201d Their weeks spent gaining courage to share is wiped out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not only that, putting social pressure on others to feel positive can actually leave them feeling <em>worse <\/em>than they already did<\/strong>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21787076\">2012 research summary<\/a> of four separate studies showed that expecting others to feel happy can cause them to instead feel more negative and bad about themselves.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Positive thinking or denial?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_52285\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52285\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5782578746_979a6ca86e-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"benefits of positive thinking\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5782578746_979a6ca86e-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5782578746_979a6ca86e.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/63532442@N06\/5782578746\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Mamadob<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><em>Another very real danger of positive thinking is that it can be used to hide denial behind. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s one thing to know you are having<\/strong> money issues and to believe you can sort them out with the right help (positive thinking).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it&#8217;s quite another to decide that<\/strong> your money issues will sort themselves out, because &#8216;it&#8217;s all good!&#8221;, so off you go to buy that dress you love (denial).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not sure if you are or aren&#8217;t practising denial?<\/strong> Sit down and write a list of pros and cons around your situation. If you&#8217;ve not let yourself look at any of those cons until now, and\/or if the positives are also things you&#8217;ve not quite thought through, then yes, you have likely been in denial.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">So when IS positive thinking useful?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_52289\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52289\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11415851166_ca7f250d27-400x294.jpg\" alt=\"positivity\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11415851166_ca7f250d27-400x294.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11415851166_ca7f250d27.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jessicamullen\/11415851166\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">jessica mullen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a cue from cognitive behavioural therapy here. CBT is <strong>one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-evidence-based-therapy-practise-and-treatment.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">evidence based<\/span> <\/a>(proven to work) forms of therapy now available, and it uses positive thinking in it\u2019s process. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A CBT therapist asks you to do \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">thought charts<\/span><\/a>\u2019. You recognise a negative thought and right it down. You then find the exact opposite thought, often an extremely positive one. Looking at both the negative and positive thoughts you have come up with, the next task is to find a \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">balanced thought<\/span>\u2019 that falls somewhere between the two and feels believable to you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">So positive thinking is very effective, not when it is used as denial, but when it is used to show us how unhelpful and untrue our negative thinking is. In this way it can help us open up our minds to possibilities and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> other perspectives<\/span><\/a> we might not have seen before.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How you can use positive thinking and get results <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So seeing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CBT therapist<\/span> <\/a>aside, how else can you begin to experience the benefits of positive thinking?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Here are some techniques that therapists use that you can try for yourself: <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Mindfulness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mindfulness<\/span><\/a> helps you become aware of your thoughts in the first place. With commitment and practise, you realise that you are not your thoughts, but something much more powerful. And you have the power to choose which thoughts to respond to. Research proves that taking time each day to practice gratitude has long-reaching psychological benefits &#8211; read our article on &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Benefits of Gratitude<\/span><\/a>&#8221; for more.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Journalling<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Journalling<\/span><\/a> out our negative thoughts helps create space to see the positive side. It also helps you see if you are in denial. You can take a cue from CBT therapy here and do a shortened version of a thought chart: negative thought written out, followed by contrasting positive opposite, followed by finding a few balanced thoughts that land in-between the two. You might also want to write out all your positive experiences &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0092656603000588\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one study<\/span><\/a> found this improved not just mood, but also physical health.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Visualising<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Visualising something positive goes beyond just positive thinking &#8211; it can create a positive emotional state. Positive emotional states have been found to increase our capacity to see opportunities and harness our inner resources (called the &#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3156609\/\">broaden and build theory of positive emotions<\/a>&#8216;).
