Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Is the question &#8216;should I quit my job?&#8217; always hovering at the back of your mind?<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are very good reasons to leave a job. These include<\/strong> being harassed or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bullying-in-the-workplace-case-study.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bullied in the workplace<\/span><\/a>, or a job that is so stressful it\u2019s affecting your health. And also a workplace that is directly opposed to your ethics and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> personal values<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8220;Should I quit my job?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>But if you have spent your career always wanting something different, have had many job changes, or feel lost as to what job can make you happy? Here are some good questions to ask inspired by coaching and counselling.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Is your job really the thing that is upsetting you?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>You\u2019d be surprised how many people come to counselling to get help in changing their career, only to discover their career isn\u2019t the<\/strong> real problem.\u00a0What they are unhappy about and wanting to change is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-healthy-destructive-relationship\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">relationship<\/span><\/a> or their home life. Or, they have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> childhood issue<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">past trauma<\/span><\/a> that leaves them always restless or is making them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difficult-employee.htm\">a difficult employee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Focussing on career can be a perfect way to distract ourselves from other, deeper issues. Until we deal with those problems properly, there is no &#8216;perfect job&#8217; out there that can change things.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. We simply need more<\/strong> money for our growing family,\u00a0 or a job that gives us more free time. And sometimes we simply outgrow a job we took when we were young and didn&#8217;t yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">know our personal values<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">\u00a0But if you are are hoping a new job will help you feel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\">more exciting, more interesting, more powerful, more accepted, more \u2018normal\u2019, better about yourself, or more respected,\u00a0 then you are seeing an emotion from your job that is not related to your career.<\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> There is a very good chance you&#8217;ll switch jobs and still feel the same old you as always.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A job, no matter how wonderful, cannot<\/strong> meet emotional needs or fix your issues.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Is it really your boss or colleagues that are the problem?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Take a moment to think about your career to date. Do you always have the same problem with bosses and colleagues?<\/strong>\u00a0Always end up at a job with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">domineering boss you are sure is a narcissist<\/span><\/a>? Or work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">colleagues who take advantage of you<\/span><\/a> or leave you feeling under-appreciated? Or always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bullying-in-the-workplace-case-study.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feeling bullied in the workplace<\/span><\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Bad bosses and colleagues do exist. But if see a pattern, then it might be that the problem is coming from the way you interact with people. For example, if you had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">critical parent,<\/span><\/a> you might even be encouraging criticism (see our article, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Are You Mistakenly Encouraging Criticism From Others&#8217;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Are you self-sabotaging?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Crazy but true \u2013 there are some of us who quit our job because we are about to <em>succeed<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0You are about to get a promotion, or qualify for a raise, or have enough work hours logged in you can finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/she-or-he-doesnt-want-kids.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">get pregnant<\/span><\/a> and take mat leave.<\/p>\n<p>If deep inside you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">core belief<\/span> <\/a>you are not worthy of good things, or don&#8217;t deserve to be happy? You&#8217;ll tell yourself you suddenly just don&#8217;t like the job. When really you are just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self-sabotaging<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Are you quitting because you are bored?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The time does come when we have learned all there is to learn and done all there is to do.\u00a0 <\/strong>If\u00a0you are to grow both in your career and as a person, you have to make the leap to a more challenging role.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But if you are never asking for further training or a promotion, but instead constantly changing jobs to different companies but always similar roles just because you are bored? It could signal that you are suffering from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> low self-esteem<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Rather than look at new challenges, you are treading water. The problem with this tactic is that\u00a0<\/strong>it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">low-level depression<\/span><\/a>, which can manifest as feeling\u2026. bored.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Are you coming from emotions or logic?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s great to be in touch with your emotions. But the downside of<\/strong> being emotionally sensitive is that we can forget to balance out emotions with logic. This means you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">act impulsively<\/span> <\/a>only to later regret your decisions. This is particularly true for those who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">borderline personality disorder<\/span><\/a>, which can affect not just personal relationships, but also workplace ones.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">A good rule of thumb is that no matter what has happened at work, never quit from a place of big emotion. Walk away, take a time out, or a day or two out, and wait until you are calm.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Realise your desire to quit your job is about something bigger?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do you have a feeling your desire to quit your job is connected to a bigger issue?<\/strong> This might be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">low self-esteem<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a need to please others<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>fear of confrontation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inability to set boundaries<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>emotional oversensitivity<\/li>\n<li>other<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> life stress<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If so, consider seeking support before you quit. Your company might<\/strong> provide career counselling, but for these sorts of deeper issues<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/work-and-career-counselling-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> counselling<\/span> <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">personal coaching<\/span><\/a> is often advisable. This is especially the case if you think your need to always move jobs is linked to childhood patterns.
