Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Psychotherapy is not something that is set in stone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like any field of thought or\u00a0science, psychotherapy is constantly\u00a0changing and being added to. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is third wave therapy?\u00a0<em>It is the current popular movement in Western psychotherapeutic thought.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What is a &#8216;wave&#8217; in psychotherapy?<\/h2>\n<p>With new research, new ways of working with clients are found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Often these new ways of working are in reaction to the popular therapy at the time, and to what is deemed to be limiting with that approach.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">When enough people begin to support and research a new way of approaching psychotherapy, then another movement of therapy arises. Or what some call a &#8216;wave&#8217;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The &#8216;third wave&#8217; in psychotherapeutic thought<\/h2>\n<p>To date, the main approaches that have emerged since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Freud and his ideas of psychoanalysis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-approach.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">psychodynamic<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-humanistic-approach.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">humanistic<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-cognitive-approach-therapies.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cognitive<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The third wave we are now seeing is in response to cognitive therapy,<\/strong>\u00a0and it has been in progress for over a decade.\u00a0So it is often called &#8216;third wave CBT therapy&#8217;, as it is an attempt to troubleshoot and progress the tools of cognitive therapy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The third wave is a\u00a0movement away from the cognitive focus on what we\u00a0think\u00a0and feel, and towards a focus on how we\u00a0<i>relate\u00a0<\/i>to what we think it\u00a0feel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It might sound a subtle shift, but let&#8217;s look at<\/strong> what the implications of this shift might be.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding the cognitive\u00a0approach\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_82414\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/26707041369_4f063806ab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82414\" class=\"wp-image-82414 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/26707041369_4f063806ab-400x258.jpg\" alt=\"what is third wave cbt therapy \" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/26707041369_4f063806ab-400x258.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/26707041369_4f063806ab.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-82414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/pluslexia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">honey-bee<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before we\u00a0can\u00a0understand\u00a0what the third wave is, we need to go back a step and understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-cognitive-approach-therapies.htm\">the cognitive\u00a0approach<\/a>.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember, therapy is not static. So although nowadays <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/span><\/a> troubleshoots the ways we think, this wasn&#8217;t always the case.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It can help here to see therapy as a toolbox. Inside that toolbox you&#8217;ll find a\u00a0set of tools, or &#8216;interventions&#8217;. These tools can change, depending on what is found to be most effective. (And when the tools get too different, a new toolbox is required to fit them \u2013 hence a new &#8216;wave&#8217;).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>With the cognitive approach, the focus was actually originally on<\/strong> looking at <em>changing your behaviours<\/em>. The idea was that it is negative\u00a0behaviours\u00a0that cause us upset, and\u00a0by changing\u00a0behaviours\u00a0then life would get better.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-behavioral-interventions.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behavioural interventions<\/span><\/a> are still a part of CBT therapy.<\/p>\n<p>But since 1970s the main focus shifted to <em>how we think<\/em>. Maladaptive thinking, or &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cognitive distortions<\/span><\/a>&#8216;, lead to low moods and dissatisfaction in life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The classic CBT way of seeing\u00a0 can therefore now be summed up as\u00a0<\/strong> &#8216;<em>thoughts lead to feelings lead to\u00a0behaviours&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>CBT vs The Third Wave\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>In the last decade, more and more cognitive therapists have been integrating tools that are not about thinking <\/strong>per se. They are more about going beyond just thoughts to a bigger picture.<\/p>\n<p>These include tools like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mindfulness<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">visualisation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">acceptance<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">personal values<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">psychological flexibility<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>self-awareness<\/li>\n<li>spirituality<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;metacognition&#8217; (where we step\u00a0outside of ourselves to observe ourselves).\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>CBT vs Third Wave Therapies<\/h2>\n<p><em>Again, the third wave is still a movement in progress. But what might we say are the\u00a0emerging\u00a0ways of seeing that the third wave is bringing?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>CBT focuses on &#8216;dysfunction&#8217;.<\/strong> What are the negative thoughts and\u00a0behaviours\u00a0that need to change? In this way it can be said to have a &#8216;pathological&#8217; focus and be about elimination. <em>What needs to be removed so you can feel better?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> Third wave therapies, on the other hand, are interested in helping you be more at ease with yourself and the world.<\/strong> <em>The focus is less on removing what is, or seeing it as &#8216;flawed&#8217;, but on adjusting the ways we see and feel about what is.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>It aims to see the bigger picture, and where we place ourselves in that bigger picture.\u00a0Instead of\u00a0 looking for what needs to be removed or eliminated like CBT, the third wave approach suggests we look at the context. Is there even a &#8216;problem&#8217;? Or is the way we are seeing, responding to, and resisting the problem that makes it a problem at all?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Third wave therapies are also not just seeking to just &#8216;solve a problem&#8217; like cognitive therapies. They are more about<\/strong> processes. What is the process of becoming a happier, more whole\u00a0person? Do they discuss<\/strong> mindfulness?
