Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dividing personalities into groups goes back to at least the<\/strong> Greeks, with their system of &#8216;four humours&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>But most modern personality systems, such as the Myers-Briggs, are<strong>\u00a0a\u00a0modified take on a system for understanding personality created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-introduction-jungian-psychology.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jung<\/span><\/a> himself<\/strong>, along with the terms &#8216;extrovert&#8217; and &#8216;introvert&#8217;.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So what exactly are Jung&#8217;s personality types?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jung Personality Types\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jung formed his view of personality types because of his desire to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-therapeutic-alliance.htm\">therapeutic\u00a0relationship<\/a>.\u00a0He\u00a0realised\u00a0that the personality of a therapist affected the way he or she interacted and helped clients.<\/p>\n<p><em>Of course\u00a0he ended up creating a system that was applicable to all\u00a0relationships, and\u00a0can still be useful to you today.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">A warning about personality types\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s important to note<\/strong> (as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freud-vs-jung-similarities-differences.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jung<\/span><\/a> himself did) that &#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">There are many ways of grouping and\u00a0generalising\u00a0 personalities. The idea is to understand\u00a0ourselves\u00a0and each other better, not put each other into boxes or limit each other.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>We are not &#8216;fixed&#8217;. Despite our tendency to have certain personalities, we can work towards more balance.\u00a0 <\/strong>And personality types are not things we can see under a microscope. He called these the two &#8216;attitude&#8217; types.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introversion<\/strong> \u2013 you are inward looking. You focus your energy on yourself and your own thoughts\/feelings\/experiences, which you find more interesting than the world around you. You need time and space to yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extroversion<\/strong> \u2013 you are outward looking. Your energy is focused towards the external world, to others or other things\/experiences.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0You need action, and to be with others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The Four &#8216;Functions&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Of course Jung soon realised that people were far too complex with too many sides to their personalities to all fit <\/strong>into two categories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0He decided that his system needed\u00a0to allow for more differences, so he added what he called <\/strong>the four &#8216;functions&#8217;. These are the two opposing pairs of thinking\/ feeling, and sensation\/ intuition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thinking<\/strong> \u2013 logic and intellect are the lenses you see things through.\u00a0 You are a rational sort with a good grasp of cause and effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeling<\/strong> \u2013 this one was rather poorly named, Jung himself\u00a0realised\u00a0it too late. It&#8217;s not about living from a place of emotions but about being the sort who always evaluates if something agrees with you or not. You make value judgements over whether something is good\/bad, positive\/negative, pleasant\/unwanted, etcetera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sensation<\/strong> \u2013 you make decisions based on sensory\u00a0impressions.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0It&#8217;s about how things look like and sound like to you. They are not good with their feelings and can be awkward and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-passive-aggressive-behaviour.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">defensive in relationships<\/span><\/a>. Often intellectuals, scholars, philosophers etc.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Extroverted Thinking Type<\/h4>\n<p>Driven by logic, thinking, and practical outcomes at the expense of feelings, they are dutiful but can lack warmth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">empathy<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Often scientists\/lawyers\/engineers etc.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Introverted Feeling Type<\/h4>\n<p>Inward-looking and reserved, they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shyness-in-adults.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">quiet types<\/span><\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don&#8217;t like conflict<\/span> <\/a>or ugliness. Can come across as illogic, dreamy, and sometimes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> depressed<\/span><\/a>. Loyal and often with strong spiritual tendencies. The classic archetype here would be a nun or spiritual seeker.<\/p>\n<h4>Extroverted Feeling Type<\/h4>\n<p>Social, conventional, and charming, these types have no problems with social situations but it&#8217;s important to them to fit in and be successful. They can have a tendency to be shallow or slightly manipulative. Often in media, PR, marketing, and sales, with many actors in this category.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Introverted Sensation Type<\/h4>\n<p>Living life from their personal sensory experiences, they can seem quite out of touch with reality and\u00a0ungrounded, or\u00a0special\u00a0and visionary.\u00a0They might claim to have a\u00a0capactity\u00a0to see, hear, or experience things others don&#8217;t, like visions, ghosts, etc. Often creative, such as artists writers and musicians.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Extroverted Sensation Type\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The least focused on the inner world, they can dismiss it entirely. They much enjoy living in the material world and the sensations it can provide, from lavish meals out to extreme sports.\u00a0These are the hustlers and &#8216;bon\u00a0vivants&#8217; of the world, but they can also veer toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">addiction<\/span><\/a> and perversions where their love of sensation goes to the dark side.\u00a0Business types.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Introverted Intuition Type<\/h4>\n<p>These are the dreamers of the world, seeking to understand our ways of being via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dream-analysis-therapy-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dreams<\/span><\/a>, spiritual ideas, revelations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-archetypes.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">archetypes<\/span><\/a>. They might bring new revelations to\u00a0light, and\u00a0would have once\u00a0once\u00a0been the shamans and the mystics. but there is also the danger of being lost in the fantasies and being an outcast. This type often\u00a0end\u00a0up poets, psychics, or working in new age or religious circles.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Extroverted Intuition Type<\/h4>\n<p>Despite enjoying seeing a problem from all angles, this type will ultimately choose their\u00a0intuition\u00a0over paying attention to facts. They can be\u00a0exciting\u00a0groundbreakers, but they can also be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">impulsive<\/span><\/a> and irresponsible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">often not\u00a0finishing\u00a0things<\/span><\/a>. They don&#8217;t like playing by rules or conventions and can ruffle feathers. This type is\u00a0where\u00a0you&#8217;ll likely find<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/changing-workplace.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> entrepreneurs<\/span><\/a> and designers.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How are Jung personality types useful to you?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>For Jung, the whole point of understanding ourselves is to achieve<\/strong>\u00a0<em>&#8216;individuation&#8217;<\/em> &#8211; finding our &#8216;real&#8217; selves.
