So they can&#8217;t be &#8216;fixed&#8217; in a day. This explains why you promise yourself you&#8217;ll commit, but continue to get involved with unavailable sorts, run away from relationships, or use a push-pull pattern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Can one &#8216;bad&#8217; relationship give you a fear of commitment?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you didn&#8217;t have any other issues you&#8217;d have enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">resilience<\/span><\/a> to get over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-healthy-destructive-relationship\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bad relationship<\/span><\/a>. You would learn from it and try another, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">healthier relationship<\/span><\/a>. But if you develop commitment phobia, or keep choosing unhealthy partners it&#8217;s impossible to commit to, it would point to pre-existing psychological issues.<\/p>\n<p><em>So\u00a0just\u00a0what\u00a0are these psychological issues that cause fear of commitment?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5 Psychological Issues That Contribute to Fear of Commitment\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Attachment Issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Attachment theory<\/span><\/a> states that in order to evolve into an adult that can feel safe and happy in a relationship, we need to have proper &#8216;attachment&#8217; as an infant and young child. We have a parent who is not<\/strong> emotionally or mentally\u00a0well, and\u00a0is unable to be consistent in their love and affection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This might be a<\/strong> stressed parent, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">addict<\/span><\/a> parent, a parent who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">had a difficult childhood<\/span> <\/a>themselves, or just a parent who didn&#8217;t really want to be parent. Regardless, we grow up without patterns of secure attachment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So\u00a0we end up with &#8216;anxious&#8217; or &#8216;avoidant&#8217; attachment patterns,<\/strong> which are pretty much as they sound, and make commitment very hard.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">[For more on this, read our article on &#8220;<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">What is Your Attachment Style?<\/a><\/span>&#8220;.]\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Low Self-Esteem.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Is it not just relationships you can&#8217;t commit to, but really, well&#8230;. anything?<\/strong> Do you find yourself shying away from things like buying a house, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">getting married<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">choosing a career<\/span><\/a>, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">big goals<\/span><\/a> and new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">friendships<\/span><\/a>? Childhood trauma. <\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Childhood trauma<\/span><\/a>\u00a0leaves us unable to trust, and we need to trust to commit to relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Trauma does not have to mean living through\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">natural disaster<\/span> <\/a>or being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/were-you-sexually-abused-as-a-child.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sexually abused<\/span><\/a>. (Although both are very traumatic. And abuse is a sadly common form of trauma).\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Keep in mind that childhood trauma is what your<\/span> <em>child<\/em> brain perceived as traumatic, not\u00a0your\u00a0<em>adult\u00a0<\/em>brain.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Something like parents leaving you with grandparents for six months, for example, might be something you can\u00a0rationalise\u00a0now. But your childhood brain likely programmed it as complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">abandonment<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Personality Disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">Personality disorders<\/a> mean that since at least your teenage years your ways of thinking and behaving leave you far outside the &#8216;norm&#8217;. Because of this, relationships tend to be a real struggle with most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">personality disorder diagnoses<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a case like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">borderline personality disorder (BPD)<\/span><\/a> there is usually both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trauma<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">attachment issues<\/span><\/a>, but they are combined with a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fear of abandonment<\/span><\/a> which is a main symptom of the disorder.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>5. Negative\u00a0Core Beliefs.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Core beliefs<\/span><\/a> are the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> assumptions<\/span><\/a> about yourself, others and the world that you unconsciously take as facts and\u00a0live your life by.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82628\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82628\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"fear of commitment\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5195953043_46190a5bfb-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jronaldlee\/5195953043\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">James Lee<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In the case of a commitment\u00a0phobia, these beliefs might\u00a0sounds\u00a0like, &#8220;I am not worthy of love&#8221;, &#8216;love is dangerous&#8217;, &#8216;if I commit to something it will go wrong&#8217;, or &#8216;I am not worthy of good things&#8217;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>But before you jump to conclusions&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, many people with commitment phobia have the above issues.<\/p>\n<p>But there is another very good reason you might be afraid of commitment and it&#8217;s one not enough articles talk about.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>It&#8217;s possible that you don&#8217;t want to commit to a relationship because it is simply not the right relationship for you!<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Are you 25 or under, and afraid to commit to someone who is pressuring you to\u00a0date? And feel you &#8216;should&#8217; want to commit and<\/strong> &#8216;can&#8217;t\u00a0understand\u00a0your problem&#8217;? Here is a VERY important truth. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Despite films, books, and online media bombarding you with the idea that &#8216;normal&#8217; people are always in love?\u00a0 It&#8217;s not at all true. If you don&#8217;t want to commit to someone it might just be that despite the other person being nice, or good looking, or smart&#8230;. you just don&#8217;t want to date them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>There is no need to rush into being with someone. Trust your instincts and don&#8217;t push yourself into an experience you are not ready for.\u00a0<\/strong>If your body is not attracted to someone, if you feel at all\u00a0uncomfortable\u00a0around them, listen to yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the other person is at all pressuring you, especially physically<\/strong>, to do things you don\u2019t want, <em>walk away.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You are you, not your friends, not other people, and not what you read on the internet.<\/p>\n<p><em>When you are ready to commit you will know it, and it will be with someone you can be yourself around.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">Need help with your fear of commitment?
