Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Worried there must be something wrong with you as you are not \u2018happy\u2019 all the time? Or, conversely, always protesting you are happy and fine?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is a common oversimplification that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-happiness-really.htm\">happiness<\/a> and psychological wellbeing are the same thing.<\/strong> Happiness can be part of wellbeing, yes. But you can actually be happy in moments but have poor wellbeing, for example.<\/p>\n<h2>What is psychological wellbeing?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"\/mental-health-test.htm\">Mental wellbeing<\/a> is less about always feeling great, and more about being at ease with yourself and the world around you, and feeling you can cope with whatever comes your way. If you take the time to work on your wellbeing, benefits can include being:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>better able to cope with challenges<\/li>\n<li>more confident and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">compassionate<\/a><\/li>\n<li>aware of who you are and what you want<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">able to handle relationships<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect with others<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">productive at work<\/a><\/li>\n<li>positive about your future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In fact psychological wellbeing is now connected to better physical health.<\/strong> You will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep better<\/a>, and be less likely to suffer endless flus and colds. You might even live longer.<\/p>\n<h2>How can I know my level of psychological wellbeing?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>You can take the test! Here in the UK there is a test often used by psychologists<\/strong> called the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), named after the universities where researchers created it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It asks questions such as<\/strong>, how optimistic do you feel about your future? How useful do you feel? And it asks about things like your energy levels and clarity of thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can take the test now for free<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samh.org.uk\/about-mental-health\/self-help-and-wellbeing\/wellbeing-assessment-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What do I do if my wellbeing test score is low?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Just like we can improve our physical health with things like exercise and diet, there are<\/strong> tools you can use to improve your mood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And before you say \u2018it won\u2019t work\u2019, it\u2019s now been shown we can train our brains to feel better.<\/strong> Neuroplasticity is the capacity of the brain and its neurons to reorganise and create new connections. It\u2019s also about<\/strong> feeling connected with the world, and like life has purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can help to group your wellbeing activities so that they create a healthy balance<\/strong>. The NHS refers to the 5 evidence-based steps of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">get active<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect with others<\/a>, keep learning, be aware of yourself and the world, give to others&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you can create your own way of grouping activities<\/strong>, with headings like the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Being active<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a>, time in nature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dancing<\/a>, gardening, walking to work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Connecting with yourself<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\">journalling<\/a>, time alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bibliotherapy-read-yourself-better.htm\">self help<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-go-to-therapy-pros-and-cons.htm\">attending therapy<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spirituality-and-mental-health.htm\"> spiritual practices<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Connecting with others<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">time with friends<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\">family events<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering<\/a>, mentoring, being kind to strangers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Finding meaning<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditating<\/a>, yoga, praying, reading books about the world, watching documentaries, community groups, volunteering, travelling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Self care<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>eating well, exercise, decluttering,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> setting boundaries<\/a>, taking time to yourself, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">improving communication<\/a>, limiting habits like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">drinking<\/a>\/smoking, finding support, reaching out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>Joy and learning<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>travel, hobbies, taking a class, learning a new skill, learning a new language, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>But I already do those things and still feel low?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ask yourself the following questions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the last week, how many of these activities have I actually done?<\/li>\n<li>Are they activities I actually enjoy, or what I think I<em> should<\/em> enjoy, or my friends\/partner like?<\/li>\n<li>When did I last try a new wellness activity?<\/li>\n<li>Do I tend to start such activities then get distracted by work or helping others?<\/li>\n<li>Do I actually prioritise other things before my wellbeing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Remember, neuroplasticity works with repetition. Many of us \u2018think\u2019 we participate in wellbeing, but it\u2019s something that comes last<\/strong> on the list, or when we have time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">True well-being requires commitment. It means scheduling in your wellbeing activities and making them as non-negotiable as things like work deadlines.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>And if my wellbeing test score is so low I&#8217;m worried?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your wellbeing score is very low (under 32 on the WEMWBS), it\u2019s time to seek support.<\/strong> If you have a trusted friend you can talk to, that is wonderful. But our friends, despite their good intentions, are often invested in our choices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which is where therapy comes in.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> creates a safe, non judgmental space for you to share what is bothering you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">You don\u2019t have to be at rock bottom to go to therapy, that is a myth. In fact the best time to start therapy is when you realise you aren\u2019t coping and need some help. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It might be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationship problem<\/a>, feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">stuck and unhappy in your career<\/a>, or just feeling low for six weeks or more.
