The reality, however, is different. <\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>The psychological impact of technology in the workplace<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axa.co.uk\/newsroom\/media-releases\/2017\/generation-stress-research\/\">report <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">workplace stress<\/a> by<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> insurance company AXA <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">states<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">stress in the workplace is strongly linked to the \u2018always on\u2019 culture, with <strong>almost three in every five Brits (59%) admitting to taking calls outside of working hours, while more than half (55%) check their emails.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This &#8216;always on&#8217; culture leaves us at risk of suffering adverse health issues due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a> and overwhelm. Add to this the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">physical strain that too much time in front of computers can cause, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and the downside of technology <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">becomes <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">evident. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>And many of us go home from our workplace computer to even more screen time, <\/strong>passing evenings on our phones, iPads, and televisions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>New research on<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/too-much-screen-time-depression.htm\">the impact of screen time on wellbeing<\/a> is divided and controversial, but\u00a0 links have been made to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> mood disorders,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">attention problems<\/a>, obesity, and even lack of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\"> empathy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><strong>So what has become the norm in the British workplace?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Do the below sound a little too familiar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Being on-call 24\/7, typically with no extra pay<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Feeling obligated to check emails even before bed and upon waking<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Not moving around sufficiently, or having enough breaks from the screen, which affects eyesight and can result in Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(among other possible side effects mentioned above) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Failing to have in-person conversations and work discussions with colleagues, even though they may be in the same room or close by<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Being expected to learn new software or technology skills on your own time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><strong>What emotional issues are you experiencing as a result?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_82888\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82888\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/808334542_c217dc586e-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"the impact of technology in the workplace\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/808334542_c217dc586e-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/808334542_c217dc586e.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chumpolo\/808334542\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Matt Seppings<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We all have days where work is a struggle.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A range of emotions can surface during the day and after you leave work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Although some issues may not seem particularly problematic in isolation, they can build up over time<\/strong> and threaten your mental wellbeing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Here\u2019s what to keep an eye out for: <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #993366;\">1. Feelings of isolation.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Although technology is incredibly useful and allows us to communicate in an instant,<strong> it can also leave us feeling cut-off from colleagues, clients and friends, isolated from a lack of <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">eye-to-eye, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">personal interaction.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In other words the longer you are staring at a screen, the less time you have to make real, sustainable connections, gaug<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ing<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> people\u2019s reactions to what you are saying, pick<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">up on their nuances of speech, and generally interact<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ing in ways that our brains were designed to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #993366;\">2. Inability to wind down.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our minds don\u2019t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> fully switch off when <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">we<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong> are connected to technology.<\/strong> You are subconsciously on alert for incoming messages and emails, even if you do not realise it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Using technology before you go to bed is a particularly bad idea. <\/strong>D<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">espite the controversy around screen time research, the one undisputed conclusion was that the blue light of screens<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> seriously affect<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> your quality of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #993366;\">3. Pressure to complete work faster.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The idea that technology should make tasks faster means that some employers begin to expect a higher and often unrealistic output from employees. This will only increase as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ai-and-mental-health.htm\">AI becomes a part of the workplace<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This of course often means that factoring in the flaws of technology doesn&#8217;t happen. The result is<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0additional pressure, which can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burn-out-syndrome.htm\">burnt-out<\/a> and dissatisfaction with your working life in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. And a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563204000202\"> study\u00a0on the way we read on screens<\/a> found it leads to\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-people-at-work.htm\">stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a> faster than reading on paper.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #993366;\">5. Worry about losing your job.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Technology has been used to streamline businesses, cutting costs by replacing human workers with machines. If you fear your job will become redundant in the future, this can cause extreme worry and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Impulsivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that technology would make you suddenly impulsive per se. But if you already have the character trait of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsivity<\/a>, email can see you say things on screen to your colleagues you would never dare say in person. The end result can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">regret<\/a>, stress, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">extreme anxiety<\/a>. Or, of course, losing your job.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><strong>So how might these issues affect you in practice?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Stress,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\"> loneliness<\/a>, not enough down time, impulsive behaviours, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\"> poor sleep<\/a> are all factors that can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Symptoms can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Feeling run down all the time <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">L<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">osing interest in your hobbies, social life, and\/or job <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">Difficulty in making decisions<\/a> due to overwhelm<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">increasingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">negative and pessimistic <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">thoughts <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Lack of ability to focus<\/a> on work tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a tendency to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\"> always have a cold or the flu<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> For more symptoms of depression, see our &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Depression<\/a>&#8220;. For anxiety, read our article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">When it is Time to Seek Help for Anxiety?<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><strong>Can you reduce the level of stress caused by technology?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><b>Schedule in screen free time. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Consider committing to several hours a week where you don\u2019t even check your phone but allow yourself no distraction from being in the moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Exercise.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Exerci<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">se <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">gets you away from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">technology and into your body and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> present moment<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. It increasingly shows the benefits for our psychological health. Again, if it\u2019s only a local park at lunch time, it\u2019s a start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Switch off technology well before bedtime.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Experts now recommend you stop using screens at least one hour before sleep time, if not two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Up your self care.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Eat foods that give you energy instead of deplete you, and watch out for habits that can increase depression and anxiety, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">overindulging in alcohol<\/a>. Learn about good sleep hygiene. And take time each week to do things that help you feel good, whether that is a long hot bath or going for a massage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Try <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">mindfulness<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> meditation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> is now evidence based for helping with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>, and even increasing your focus. And unless you are using a mindfulness app, it\u2019s a technology free experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Talk to your boss and colleagues.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There can be a culture of competition in some workplaces. But refusing to admit to stress and anxiety affects your performance and can even lead to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">nervous breakdown<\/a>, which is surely worse than admitting you are human.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">You may find that colleagues also experience similar issues, and discussing your situation with someone who understands can have positive results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium; color: #333333;\">At the point you need real support? <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/workplace-stress-help-guide.htm\">Workplace stress<\/a> is a very common reason people attend therapy. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A counsellor can help you get to the root of the issue, as well as support you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\">gaining your confidence<\/a>. You can learn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communication skills<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">set boundaries<\/a> at work where required, and learn to make choices that energise over deplete you.
