<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/short-term-therapy-vs-long-term-therapy.htm\">long term or short-term therapy<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Do I want to discuss my past, or focus on my present and future?<\/li>\n<li>What sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-trust-my-therapist.htm\">relationship do I want with my therapist<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Do I want something structured or open-ended?<\/li>\n<li>Am I happy to do some group therapy, or do I only want to work one-on-one with a therapist?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Long term borderline personality disorder treatment<\/h2>\n<p>Now let\u2019s look at how therapies that help with BPD work.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Schema Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">Schema therapy<\/a> was designed specifically for people who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorders<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It helps you recognise the patterns you are trapped in that keep you behaving in certain ways, and also gives you an opportunity to try fully trusting someone.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the heart of schema therapy is the idea that we all live out certain themes in life, called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-schema-psychology.htm\">schemas<\/a>&#8216;.\u00a0 These are patterns of behaviour we choose when we are children, and then repeat throughout our lives.\u00a0 For example, the &#8216;abandonment schema\u2019 means you believe whoever gets close to you will eventually leave you, and that you must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreact<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">sabotage each relationship<\/a> to protect yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schema therapy is unique in that it offers something called \u2018limited reparenting\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0Your therapist \u2018stands in\u2019 as the reliable parent you didn\u2019t have. These are regulating your emotions (how to change what you feel), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> (accepting the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> present moment<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">distress tolerance<\/a> (how to navigate emotional upset), and interpersonal effectiveness (how to relate your needs and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> boundaries<\/a> without upsetting both yourself and others).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A highly structured therapy, DBT therapy involves homework.<\/strong> This might include trying out your new skills and reporting how it went. You learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/understanding-people.htm\">understand people<\/a> (and yourself) better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The belief here is that the main issue for those with BPD is that they lack a natural tendency to understand the ways other people actually think and feel.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">You might think you understand people perfectly, better than anyone, but you are not seeing them as they are. The world in your head is actually different than the world others are inhabiting. And you also don\u2019t see yourself as others see you.\u00a0 This can obviously lead to a lot of confusion for you, and can mean you overreact and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-engulfment.htm\">problematic relationships<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can get MBT on the NHS if you are diagnosed as borderline and they feel it might help you. You might start out with sessions in a group. Although MBT is used as a short-term therapy in some cases, when it comes to BPD it tends to be at least 18-24 months.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>all about learning to understand others<\/li>\n<li>present-focussed<\/li>\n<li>sessions are more open-ended over structured<\/li>\n<li>often done as a group therapy<\/li>\n<li>longer term therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Short-term borderline personality disorder treatment<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Cognitive analytical therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-cognitive-analytic-therapy.htm\">Cognitive analytical therapy (CAT)<\/a> combines elements of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-cognitive-approach-therapies.htm\">cognitive therapy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">psychoanalysis<\/a>, and is recognised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg78\">National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)<\/a> as a possible BPD treatment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The focus of CAT therapy is, like schema therapy, on patterns. But CAT focuses exclusively on patterns of relating. What are your responses to other people, and how are they affecting your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Again like schema therapy, there is a focus on a strong relationship between you and your therapist. This relationship itself is seen as a tool of change, where you can see your problems with relating and then try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">new ways of communicating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>all about how you relate to others<\/li>\n<li>does look to your past to see how your problems started<\/li>\n<li>strong focus on your relationship with your therapist<\/li>\n<li>time-limited, often 16-24 sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> is currently the most popular form of therapy in the UK, often recommended by the NHS. And it has some evidence base for helping with BPD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CBT focuses on the link between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. How do they ways you are thinking lead to the behaviours that cause you problems, and what can you do to troubleshoot that cycle?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very structured therapy focussing on your present issues. It does involve homework, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">doing &#8216;thought charts&#8217;<\/a>, where you learn to recognise and challenge your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive behavioural therapy can help you with borderline personality disorder because it trains you to<\/strong> automatically question if your thoughts are true or assumptions, slowing down your reaction time and helping you feel more balanced.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>looks at the connection between your thoughts and behaviours<\/li>\n<li>helps you retrain your brain to think in less negative, reactive ways<\/li>\n<li>focuses on present issues<\/li>\n<li>highly structured, involves homework<\/li>\n<li>short-term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How soon will I get better if I try BPD treatment?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A personality disorder means that you see the world differently than others.<\/strong> So it isn\u2019t like getting over the flu!<\/p>\n<p><strong> It\u2019s a lifelong experience. Although of all the personality disorders, BPD is the one that does change with age<\/strong>. It\u2019s found that most people find their symptoms lessen when they reach their 40s. Of course therapy means that you don\u2019t have to wait. You can learn to manage your symptoms now.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Most people find that when they start borderline personality disorder treatment, things can feel worse before they feel better.<\/strong> You are having to really face up to yourself, and to learn entirely new ways of seeing yourself, which isn\u2019t always a walk in the park.<\/p>\n<p><em>But stick with it.
