Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Life can give, but it can also take away without warning.<\/strong> And we all know that when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\">what is lost is a loved one<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">a relationship that matters<\/a>, it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement and loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But what about losing something you love like<\/strong>\u00a0an ongoing social event you&#8217;ve attended for years, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering job<\/a> you loved, some aspect of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">health or fitness<\/a>, or even an object that was very precious to you?<\/p>\n<h2>The emotional cost of losing something you love<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is absolutely possible to experience feelings of loss, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/symptoms-of-bereavement-how-to-cope.htm\">bereavement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/children-and-grief.htm\">grief<\/a> even if what we lost isn\u2019t a person.<\/strong> This can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>having mood swings<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feeling tired<\/a><\/li>\n<li>not wanting to do your usual activities<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li>feeling vulnerable<\/li>\n<li>wanting to be alone<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\">sleep problems<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">changes in eating patterns<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Feel overwhelmed by any of the above? You are not just losing your grandmother\u2019s necklace you inherited, you are losing your sense of being responsible and feeling connected. Who wouldn\u2019t mourn that?<\/p>\n<h2>But aren\u2019t I overreacting?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Experiencing really big emotions around losing something you loved? <\/strong>It can be down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">core beliefs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\">repressed emotions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">Core beliefs<\/a> are the ideas we form about ourselves and the world when we are children.<\/strong> We then live out these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> as if they are facts, not even realising we are being controlled by them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Losing something we care about can trigger these beliefs,<\/strong> which can sound like, &#8216;the world is a dangerous place&#8217;, &#8216;I deserve bad things&#8217;, &#8216;I can&#8217;t be trusted&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Such thoughts are obviously<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">distorted thinking<\/a>. Suddenly we feel really sad, or really angry, not realising we are expressing years worth of backed up feelings, or what some call \u2018being triggered\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>What can I do to feel better after losing something I loved?<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Don\u2019t beat yourself up. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It is actually okay and normal to be upset for weeks to come when you lose something you relied on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Telling yourself to \u2018stop being such a wimp\u2019 or to \u2018grow up\u2019 is not helpful. Imagine you are talking to your best friend. Would you tell him\/her to &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">not be so dramatic<\/a>&#8216;, or would you understand that losing something they valued has left them feeling vulnerable?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Give yourself time. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Consider it like a kind of mourning. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-grieving-process-online.htm\">Mourning<\/a> takes time, and everyone has their own timeline here. You will move on when you are ready, and that is the perfect timing.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Do some digging. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The best way to get over something is often to go through it<\/strong>. If you can get to what is really going on for you, what the lost thing has triggered, then you can process the real issues and emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\"> Journaling<\/a> can be great here, as can be\u00a0<\/strong>talking to trusted friends. Free form discussion is good to see what comes up. But also ask yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">good questions<\/a> that begin with how\/what (why questions tend to be rabbit holes). This includes things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what did losing this thing make me feel?<\/li>\n<li>how does my life now feel different than it did before the loss?<\/li>\n<li>if I could tell the object\/experience\/event that I lost something, what would it be?<\/li>\n<li>what might I have really lost here, behind the obvious?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">what goals could I set<\/a> to get back that sense of worth\/connection\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">trust<\/a> in other ways?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When is the time to seek proper support?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If it\u2019s been more than six weeks and you are still feeling low or edgy,<\/strong> it\u2019s worth reaching out for professional support.
