Not understanding how to listen.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Listening is not a skill that is well taught at school, <strong>and if your parents didn\u2019t listen to you, you might have even been raised to <em>not<\/em> listen.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Listening is actually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> about deciding what to say next, thinking of the best advice to give, or sharing your opinions and similar experiences. Talking too much.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_88381\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13987205187_bda43b4010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88381\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13987205187_bda43b4010-400x265.jpg\" alt=\"communication problems \" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13987205187_bda43b4010-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13987205187_bda43b4010.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13987205187_bda43b4010-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-88381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/39908901@N06\/13987205187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">m01229<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>This can cause real difficulty at school or work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>People might assume you&#8217;re too talkative because you are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\">confident<\/a> or egotistical.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When actually talking too much can be a result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a>.<\/strong> Your nervousness starts you talking, which makes you even more nervous, and then you can\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talking a lot can also be a way for people with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/get-closer-intimacy-issues.htm\"> intimacy issues<\/a> to hide themselves.<\/strong> Without realising it you will create a wall of words between you and others, where you talk about everything but the things that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">reveal your true self<\/a> and your real vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Interrupting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes always interrupting others is simply a case of poor listening skills. You are so busy planning what to say next that you don\u2019t hear the other person and jump in.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But if you always interrupt before you can seem to stop yourself, and it frustrates you as much as it frustrates other people, and you sometimes feel like your mouth is several steps ahead of your mind? Never sharing how you feel.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is a common one in romantic relationships, with one partner always complaining the other never shares how he\/she feels.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The thing that goes unrecognised is that some of us don\u2019t know <em>how<\/em> to talk about our feelings. In fact we don&#8217;t even know how to name what we feel in the first place. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It might be you are a man raised in a very patriarchal culture, meaning you were encouraged to not pay attention to or communicate feelings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">But more commonly, not knowing what you feel comes from being parented in ways that taught you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">suppress your real emotions<\/a>. This happens, for example, if you are only shown love when you are \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018quiet\u2019 but have love and attention withdrawn if you dare to be sad or angry. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A child get so used to suppressing a side of themselves they grow up into an adult who doesn\u2019t even recognise his or her own feelings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Not asking for what you need.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>On the other end of the communication problem spectrum are those who share all their feelings but then don\u2019t know how to ask for what they need.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you expect others to just know what you need. But other people don\u2019t read minds. And they see things from their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> perspective<\/a>, not yours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not asking for what you need can be because of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependent behaviour<\/a>, where you are so used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/generous-person-or-over-giver.htm\">over-giving<\/a> in order to maintain your sense of self you completely neglect your own needs. This can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-passive-aggressive-behaviour.htm\">passive aggressive behaviour<\/a> to get your needs met.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Closed body language.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_88382\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88382\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929039275_4838955c67-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"communication problems\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929039275_4838955c67-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929039275_4838955c67.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-88382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/trevorandmarjee\/2929039275\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Trevor Owens<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you are completely confused why people find you \u2018shut off\u2019 or \u2018closed\u2019 when you are well spoken, look at the way you hold yourself. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\">Body language<\/a> communicates strong signals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have a tendency to<\/strong> cross your arms or hunch your shoulders, you might unwittingly be giving off the signal you want others to back off.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Being too direct.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Do people tell you that you lack social grace? Or you need to \u2018soften\u2019 what you say? It might be that you grew up with parents who were direct, and never developed the habit of sharing feedback gently.<\/p>\n<p>It can help to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">learn about perspective<\/a>. How might someone else see the world? And how might you better communicate taking this into account?<\/p>\n<p><strong>If this feels too hard, it could be that you are on the autistic spectrum.<\/strong> Some autistic individuals may communicate in a very straightforward way and find it challenging to interpret subtle emotional signals or implied meanings in conversation.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Saying things that always seem to confuse others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Do you struggle to understand how other people think or why they do what they do<\/strong>? And do people constantly tell you that you act or think strangely?<\/p>\n<p>There is a chance you have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\"> personality disorder<\/a> which means you see the world in a way that is different than others. Read our free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Personality Disorders<\/a> which goes through the various personality disorders and their symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2>What do I do if this is me?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do you now recognise your communication problem is simply that you were not raised by parents or caregivers who taught you how to communicate?<\/strong>\u00a0It can be as simple as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">setting the goal<\/a> to learn and finding resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it possible your communication problems might be related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependency<\/a>? Or to a childhood where you were<\/strong> forced to suppress your feelings and thoughts in order to be accepted?\u00a0 Then your issue might be deep-rooted. Working with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\"> counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> is recommended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you suspect that you might have autism, or a personality disorder, it is advisable to<\/strong> see a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychiatrist-vs-therapist.htm\"> psychiatrist<\/a>.
