Grief is for adults.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Not at all. It\u2019s not even just for humans (elephants, for example, have very exact grief rituals).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children can grieve as much as adults, even if they might seem not to<\/strong>.\u00a0This can be because children hide their grief if they are worried about their parents or younger siblings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try to create space for your child to express him or herself, <\/strong>and try to understand that a child&#8217;s way of experiencing loss and grieving can be different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read our article on<\/strong> &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/children-and-grief.htm\">Children and Mourning<\/a>&#8216; for more information.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>2. Grief only happens when we lose a loved one.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Grief from a bereavement is of course the most common sort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we can experience grief from other life experiences, too. This can be a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">losing a friend<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">losing a job we loved<\/a>, or the end of a social event we relied on for years. Grief is just an emotional thing.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_88471\" style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88471\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6697132255_c03c97f1a4-3.jpg\" alt=\"grief and loss\" width=\"397\" height=\"303\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-88471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/74285857@N05\/6697132255\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Mic445<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Grief can actually be quite physical.<\/strong> Many people find grieving leaves them<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"> exhausted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It can also completely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">change your appetite<\/a> and give you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>. You might have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">unexplained aches and pains<\/a>, and feel like you are catching every cold and flu that comes along.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Grief follows five stages.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The five stages to grief were proposed by<\/strong> Elisabeth Kubler-Ross way back in the late sixties and have been popular (and expanded on) ever since. The original five stages she proposed are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>denial<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">anger<\/a><\/li>\n<li>bargaining<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\">acceptance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">But these stages are just a guide. Grief is an individual experience, and there is simply no way it is going to follow a pre-set agenda.\u00a0You might find you experience all of these stages, you might only experience one or two, you might do things in a completely different order, and you might experience emotional states that don\u2019t seem to fit these stages at all.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. It\u2019s okay to grieve someone forever.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_88470\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88470\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8164871485_248bf70e33-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"loss and grief\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8164871485_248bf70e33-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8164871485_248bf70e33.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8164871485_248bf70e33-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-88470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sonofgroucho\/8164871485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Son of Groucho<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s definitely normal and okay <\/strong>to miss someone always.<\/p>\n<p>But grieving and missing someone are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grief that goes on for longer than several months and also causes real change in your<\/strong> personality or day-to-day life needs to be paid attention to.<\/p>\n<p>If symptoms include things like social withdrawal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">depression<\/a>, rage, deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">feelings of guilt<\/a>, and marked changes to eating and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\"> sleeping patterns<\/a>, then it might be time to seek help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Complicated grief\u2019 is a term used to describe grief that goes on for six months or more and seriously <\/strong>affects your ability to function. It requires different treatment than regular grief. Look out for things like self-destructive thoughts, an inability to think of anything but your loss, and a feeling that you can&#8217;t handle life without the other person because it no longer has meaning.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You have to feel grief when someone dies.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.336.5479&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\"> large scale study of people who lost a partner<\/a> found that not everyone experienced grief. There can, for example, be situations where the death of a partner is actually a relief and alleviates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if you find yourself feeling nothing directly after losing a loved one, <\/strong>do give it time.\u00a0Sometimes grief can be so profound we block it out for some time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if your loss happened alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">trauma<\/a>, the body&#8217;s response to the trauma can block mourning.<\/strong> This includes situations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\">losing someone in a natural disaster<\/a>, war, or crime attack.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Counselling can cure grief.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Nothing can &#8216;cure&#8217; grief except going through it, <\/strong>in our own way, and in our own timing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Instead of seeing grieving as something with an end that will ever be resolved see it more as a negotiation. How can you best negotiate a world without the person or important thing you have lost?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>While it can&#8217;t stop the process,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/bereavement-counselling-london.htm\">grief counselling<\/a> can help us manage. And it might also shorten the time you<\/strong> feel grief as you will learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\">techniques to process your emotions<\/a> instead of suppressing them.
