We are left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">lonely<\/a>, and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a> can drop. This can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression and anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why am I always feeling\u00a0 ignored?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In some cases, people feel ignored all the time because of a<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\"> personality disorder<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">Personality disorders<\/a> mean you simply don&#8217;t think, feel, and communicate like most people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is also possible you are spending time with those who don&#8217;t treat you well.\u00a0<\/strong>This can happen if you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">\u00a0low self-esteem<\/a>\u00a0or suffer from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependency.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>But most often if we feel ignored it\u2019s because the ways we interact and communicate are actually pushing other people away. We help you wherever you are in the world.]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How to get people to listen to you<\/h2>\n<p>So how to stop feeling ignored and start feeling listened to?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Drop the \u2018you\u2019 for an \u201cI\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The main reason other people shut down and don&#8217;t listen to you is if they feel under attack.<\/strong> If you have a tendency to start most sentences with \u2018you\u2019 then try to notice if you are actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">always blaming others<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/judging-people-why-we-do-it.htm\">criticising and judging them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When we start sentences with \u201cI\u201d instead of &#8216;you,\u00a0 the conversation can turn from blame into an invitation to communicate. The classic model here to try is \u201cI feel ______ when you _____.&#8221; \u201cYou make me feel bad\u201d, which is blame, becomes \u201cI feel bad when you talk to me with an angry voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you see how the first one pushes someone away, and the other one invites them to <\/strong>ask you more about how you feel? Or to discuss ways you can get along better?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Work with body language. <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_93780\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93780\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/545154152_8c2ed87f51-400x301.jpg\" alt=\"nobody listens to me\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/545154152_8c2ed87f51-400x301.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/545154152_8c2ed87f51.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-93780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/joeshlabotnik\/545154152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Joe Shlabotnik<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We don\u2019t communicate just with words but with the our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\">body language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you always have your arms crossed and shoulders hunched, you are giving people the message you don\u2019t want to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect with them<\/a><strong>.<\/strong> So they might be tuning you out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You might find mirroring helpful<\/strong>. It\u2019s been found that if we posture like the other person, they unconsciously feel more comfortable. So if they lean back in their seat, lean back in yours. If they stand in a wide stance, widen yours. Of course don&#8217;t make this too obvious, but it can be fun to try.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eye contact comes into play here<\/strong>. Maintaining appropriate amounts of it can also keep the other person engaged. Notice if your problem might be a lack of it.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Focus on similarities and positives.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If we think that nobody likes us, or that we are too different to be interesting, we will unconsciously give off this message in the way we talk and move. Others will respond to this<span style=\"color: #666699;\"> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">core belief<\/a> <span style=\"color: #993366;\">by<\/span><\/span> treating us in exactly the ways that confirm it. And so the cycle continues.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A simple trick here is to focus on the similarities and positives between you and everyone else you meet. <\/strong>\u00a0Then\u00a0try to keep them lightly in your mind for the duration of the conversation. It can be as simple as noticing their eyes being the same colour,\u00a0 that you know you share a hobby, or that you like the blue shirt they are wearing.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Take time to notice if you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"> only ever talk about negative things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you say isn&#8217;t necessarily who you are. If you were raised in a\u00a0<\/strong>household where the adults around you always complained and pointed out what was wrong, it might be you learned to speak negatively instead of in a well-rounded way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you really do<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"> feel negative<\/a> and lost inside, then don&#8217;t judge yourself.<\/strong> Take the time to find some support. Is it possible you are distracted around others and need to get more present?<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have an issue with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">distraction<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">adult ADHD<\/a> then work to integrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> into your conversations.<\/p>\n<p>This might mean<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\"> a short mindfulness break<\/a> before you meet someone, <strong>or simply bringing your attention to your breathing and your body during conversations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can help you slow down and speak more clearly as well as interrupt less.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Work through your emotions in advance.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Are you always approaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">conversations with anger<\/a>, or when you are emotional?<\/strong> This can be overwhelming for others who then tune you out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A good self-help tool here is to<\/strong> get some paper and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\">write out your emotions<\/a> before you go meet people. Promise yourself to rip up whatever you write afterwards. This lets your unconscious feel safe to release pent up feelings. Keep writing, without censoring what comes out or trying to make it legible, until you feel the emotions die down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If this does not help then you might have a serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\">anger management issue<\/a><\/strong>. Anger issues can make all areas of life hard, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">holding down a job<\/a> to gaining your family\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">trust.<\/a> But the good news is that anger issues can respond well to talk therapy.
