Don\u2019t immediately accuse people.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\">Rage<\/a> is a common response if we suddenly suspect we were abused.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many people experience a a strong impulse to go after the abuser, or call everyone that knows them to let them know<\/strong> &#8220;I think I was abused by this person&#8221;. It can seem, in the moment, the \u2018right thing to do\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But here\u2019s the thing. Discovering you might have been abused puts you in a very vulnerable mental and emotional state. Even if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/deal-with-anger-management-techniques.htm\">anger<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">cortisol rush of stress<\/a> is making you feel energised and powerful, you aren\u2019t. If someone turns around and accuses you of being dishonest, or picks a fight you aren&#8217;t ready for, not only might you lose support from people you need on your side, you might find your mental health deteriorating quickly.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not that you can\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t make a case of abuse! It\u2019s that <em>the best time to do so is when you have had time to work through your emotions and thoughts and are feeling more stable.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>And it&#8217;s also something to do when you\u00a0have support to help you navigate any fallout.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It\u2019s estimated<\/strong>\u00a0one in four children experiences some sort of sexual abuse. The reality might be higher. And many people block out memories of sexual abuse. So yes, maybe you were abused.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the same time, t<\/strong><strong>he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">symptoms of sexual abuse<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">dissociation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-body-dysmorphic-disorder.htm\">body image issues<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-sex-drive.htm\">promiscuity<\/a> &#8211; can also be from other sorts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">trauma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In our society sexual abuse has the most<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shame<\/a> around it of all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">traumas<\/a>. So it becomes the one we all assume is the problem if we have symptoms but no memories. But this means other very real and also serious traumas and mental health problems which might be the actual issue can get overlooked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The best thing to do here is to accept that something has happened to give you mental health symptoms. It might be some sort of abuse.<\/strong> Then reach our for professional support for the symptoms, tell your therapist what you suspect, and take time to work together and see what surfaces.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. We want to know the details.<\/strong>\u00a0And it&#8217;s okay to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-and-personality-disorders.htm\"> feel really angry<\/a>, frustrated and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sad<\/a> that you can&#8217;t get the facts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But until someone builds a time machine, we can\u2019t go back in time and find out exactly what happened to us. We simply do not have any control over finding out the exact facts. All we can do is accept that something difficult and tragic happened, and we have some facts but not all. And then we can focus on what we DO have facts and proof about &#8211; our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">symptoms<\/span>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You can\u2019t change the past but you can work to manage your symptoms.<\/strong> And that is what is actually going to help you progress towards healing, not obsessing on details you\u2019ll never be sure of.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Minimise other stressors.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Learning we might have been abused is an incredibly difficult and draining process.<\/strong> It is not the time to take on anything new if you don\u2019t have to. Now is not the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">look for a new job<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">pick a fight with a friend<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">set a challenging goal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In fact it\u2019s the time to lessen any unnecessary stressors.<\/strong> Are there social events you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">say no<\/a> to? Obligations you can back out of? You need down time to process your emotions and be with those who support you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The only new thing you want to be doing here is building a support team and seeking out help, like therapy, self-help books, and support groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. But here\u2019s the thing &#8211; this is self abuse. Isn&#8217;t it enough that there is abuse in your past?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How can you send a message to yourself you deserve to be taken care of?<\/strong> Can you go to bed early, say no to the social event you don\u2019t want to go to, start taking long walks, take that bubblebath you always mean to but don\u2019t get around to?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Do find support.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Be wary of reaching out to people who won\u2019t be able to handle your experience.<\/strong>\u00a0Feeling letdown is just one more thing to feel bad about you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And be careful you don\u2019t mistakenly turn to someone who is a gossip.<\/strong> It\u2019s up to you when, how and if other people find out about your experience, not someone else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If it is possible to reach out to more than one person, that is ideal.<\/strong> Working through abuse memories can mean you need a lot of support, and it isn\u2019t always fair to expect one person to provide all that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why it\u2019s also highly recommended to find any and all support elsewhere.<\/strong> There are online forums which can be useful, and you might want to consider a support group. Google to see if there is one in your area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are feeling desperate, or are having suicidal thoughts, reach out to a free helpline.<\/strong>\u00a0Read our article on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-helpline.htm\">Mental Health Helplines Available in the UK<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<h3>Why it\u2019s so important to seek professional support for sexual abuse<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Thinking we were abused attacks our sense of being safe in the world.<\/strong>\u00a0So it tends to cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic<\/a>. If you already had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> or other mental health issues, they can worsen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if memories of abuse start to surface, then you can also start to experience<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">symptoms of trauma<\/a>. This can look like feeling dissociated from reality, being jumpy and edgy, having huge emotions you don\u2019t understand, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">wanting to hide away from the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Without support, it can all spiral into a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">mental breakdown<\/a> or self-abusive behaviour including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">self-harm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people do try to navigate abuse in childhood themselves. Over many years they might reach a level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\">acceptance<\/a>.
