What is your intention for the holiday romance?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Yes, holiday romances can happen <\/strong>simply as we intend to have fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there are also holiday romances that happen because we have set out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anger-after-breakup.htm\">punish an ex<\/a>, posting photos on<\/strong> our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a> with an attractive holiday lover, or we want to try to impress someone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">While we can feel smug in the moment, in the long-term, negative intentions tend to hurt not just those people we mindlessly involve in our scheme, but our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a> and ability to like and respect ourselves.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Also clarify your intention for what any romance will become. If you are pretending you are okay with<\/strong> a fling but actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-want-to-fall-in-love-how-to.htm\">want to be in love<\/a>, don&#8217;t set yourself up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-heartbreak.htm\">heartbreak<\/a> and months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-handle-rejection.htm\">feeling rejected<\/a> by lying to yourself. Likewise, if you only want a fling, why pretend you want more? Is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\"> guilt<\/a> worth it?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. And when the fireworks end, our pain is still there, waiting. Worse, we might have added to it, by creating a situation where we feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-handle-rejection.htm\">rejected<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\">abandoned<\/a>, or used.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you are just fresh from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">bereavement<\/a>, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">major life disappointment<\/a>, is getting involved with someone you hardly know really going to help?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Not feeling good and want to speak to someone fast, while on a vacation? What are your personal values?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> might be telling you it\u2019s \u2018just what you need\u2019, to go out and \u2018have some fun\u2019. And you might even be on vacation with these very friends, <\/strong>who are all themselves having holiday flings. If yours are fun and freedom, then maybe a holiday romance is ahead. But if you value loyalty, commitment, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">deep connection<\/a>, then is it really worth going against your own grain?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The moment we listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">what others expect of us<\/a> instead of our own personal values we set ourselves up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-for-teens.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Is this you being impulsive?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Are you often doing things because it feels exciting in the moment<\/strong>, only to regret it later?<\/p>\n<p><strong>You might suffer from what is called<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsivity<\/a>\u2019 in psychology, which means you really can\u2019t trust your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">decision making process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If that is you, try to slow down and think this over<\/strong>. If you are with good friends, ask for their honest advice. If you are alone, try to write down the facts about this other person. What do you really know about them? Is this the right person to engage with, and what facts do you have to prove that?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. And it can be tempting to pretend to be someone we are not.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>While it might seem like a bit of fun to lie about who we are and pretend, you are <\/strong>sending your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious mind<\/a> a message that who you are is not good enough. It\u2019s a recipe for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Are you being mindful?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Holiday romances go wrong when we want to pretend we are in a fairytale<\/strong>. We gloss over the wedding ring we saw on his or her bathroom counter and change the subject when they mention they are not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-want-to-fall-in-love-how-to.htm\">looking for a relationship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we live in a projected future instead of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> the present moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed and caught up after meeting someone on vacation, take mini &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\">mindfulness breaks<\/a>&#8216; throughout the day.<\/strong> Draw your attention to your breath, breathing deeply and relaxing your shoulders, and notice five details around you right now. Use all your senses. Then check in with how you are feeling.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>[Not sure you get what mindfulness is? Do you have addictive tendencies around relationships?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you have a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addictive-relationships.htm\">addictive relationships<\/a>, or are a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-love-addiction.htm\"> love addict<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">sex addict<\/a>, then thinking about a holiday romance should be a red flag. \u201cOne little drink won\u2019t hurt\u2019 said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">alcoholic<\/a>, \u2018one little holiday fling won\u2019t hurt\u2019 said the sex and love addict. Reach out for support.<\/p>\n<h3>I\u2019ve had a holiday romance months ago and can\u2019t get over it. What do I do?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Holiday romances can trigger all sorts of psychological health issues. We can get back home and feel<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\">abandoned<\/a>, rejected, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">not good enough<\/a>. Obsessively stalk the other person on social media.
