Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>We all sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worry<\/a> that something bad is going to happen.<\/strong> And the reality is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">sometimes things DO go wrong<\/a>. Life is far from perfect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But is your head\u00a0 full of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">worried thoughts<\/a> all the time? And do you spend most days (if not all) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stressed<\/a> that something bad will happen to you, your loved ones, or to the world?<\/p>\n<p><em> Then it&#8217;s less likely less about any real danger, and more about issues with your thinking.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why you are sure something bad is around the corner<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>See if one or several of the below psychological issues might be behind your feeling that something bad is going to happen.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Sleep Problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Basics first. If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>, you can start to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">paranoia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">anxiety,<\/a> simply as your brain is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a> and can&#8217;t cope. If you don&#8217;t get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">help with sleep problems<\/a>, it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">depression.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Substance Abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Start being honest with yourself if<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\"> your drinking is out of hand,<\/a> or you are indulging in too many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/counselling-for-recreational-drug-addiction.htm\">party drugs<\/a>.\u00a0 These both contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">poor sleep<\/a> and exhaustion and work as depressants, both of which can leave you paranoid and on edge.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It can react to modern life stress the same as it once would to being attacked by a leopard. Namely it triggers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">the &#8216;fight or flight&#8217; mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rush of cortisol and other hormones this creates puts us on red alert, scanning for further danger.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Cognitive Distortions.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">Cognitive distortions<\/a>&#8216;<strong> are when, without even realising it, our mind warps reality.<\/strong> Some examples are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white thinking<\/a>, doom and gloom thoughts, and fortune-telling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why would you have a distorted way of seeing the world?\u00a0 You might have been<\/strong> bought up by parents who modelled this way of thinking. Or something happened to you as child that taught your brain to operate like this (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>, below).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Anxiety about something bad happening.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> involves unrealistic and uncontrollable<\/strong> racing thoughts that affect us physically, leaving us breathless, sweating, and with a racing heart. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">Paranoia<\/a> and a certainty that something bad is going to happen is par for the course here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">How do you end up with anxiety?<\/a> It can start as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>. Over time and left unchecked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress can turn into anxiety<\/a> or anxiety disorder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety can also be triggered by trauma.<\/strong> This can be recent, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\"> an accident<\/a> or shock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>. Or it can be from childhood.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Negative Core Beliefs.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If you can honestly say you&#8217;ve spent most of your adult life with a feeling something bad will happen<\/strong>, you might have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\"> core belief<\/a> that the world is not safe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">Core beliefs<\/a> are <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> we make about ourselves, others, and the world that we then mistake for fact. Childhood Trauma.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sadly, at least one in four of us live through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult and threatening experiences as children<\/a>. And our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">childhood brains<\/a> then simply decide the world is dangerous. If we aren&#8217;t offered help, or don&#8217;t seek help for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> as adults, that belief can dictate all our choices.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Personality Disorders.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Some of us just experience the world in a different manner than the average person.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">Personality disorders<\/a> mean that since early adulthood, you have consistently thought and acted differently to others in ways that make daily life a challenge. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And in the case of some<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\"> personality disorders<\/a>, this can mean you sense danger where others don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoid-personality-disorder.htm\">Paranoid personality disorder<\/a>\u00a0leaves you thinking people are out to get you, and that bad people are controlling the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizotypal-personality-disorder.htm\">Schizotypal personality disorder <\/a>can mean you see danger in strange ways, such as the TV talking to you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/avoidant-personality-disorder.htm\">Avoidant personality disorder<\/a> would see you thinking others will hurt you, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a> means you are so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">oversensitive<\/a> you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pandemic-mental-health-issues.htm\">overreact<\/a>, feeling threatened by something small.<\/p>\n<h2>I can&#8217;t stop feeling something bad will happen<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do you spend your life in fear of what bad thing will happen next?<\/strong> Feel completely unable to stop thinking this way?
