Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The most common question readers ask us is<\/strong>, &#8220;how can I remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">abuse<\/a>?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understandable. Suspecting you were abused or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">traumatised as a child<\/a> is an overwhelming experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once the shock wears off, it&#8217;s normal to want to know exactly what happened to you.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[In crisis because of abuse memories? But <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/eloftus\/Articles\/hoff.htm\">research shows that the mind doesn&#8217;t form an exact replica of experience<\/a>. And it is very easily influenced when forming &#8216;memories&#8217;.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our memories are influenced by what others tell us or insinuate happened. They are affected by other people\u2019s stories and memories that we confuse with our own. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">Assumptions<\/a> we make based on emotions we experienced, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a> at the time. And of course our own imagination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_99772\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99772\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/305106461_68217fb310-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"how to remember childhood trauma\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/305106461_68217fb310-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/305106461_68217fb310.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: torbakhopper<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>So any technique or alternative therapist who claims they can &#8216;help you remember&#8217; is not a good idea.<\/strong> There is too much of a risk they will influence what you &#8216;remember&#8217; and traumatise you even more.<\/p>\n<h2>Are you saying I wasn&#8217;t abused?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>This is not to say anyone was not abused if he or she remembers being abused!\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Sadly, statistics show that many of us were sexually\u00a0abused. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) estimates that almost one in four children in the UK experience sexual abuse.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>But it is to say that exact details can be hard to pinpoint, so obsessing over<\/strong> them can be more harmful than helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Also note that rushing off and making accusations that you unfortunately can&#8217;t prove is not the best<\/strong> immediate tactic when suspecting you were abused. Despite no other memories but just as you have &#8216;symptoms&#8217;? Know that<\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\">\u00a0things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression, anxiety<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-sex-drive.htm\">sexual issues<\/a> can stem from all sorts of childhood experiences and traumas, not just sexual abuse. <\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Instead of obsessing on &#8216;remembering&#8217; abuse that might not have even happened, obsess on seeking support for your symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">So does this mean a therapist won\u2019t believe I was abused?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\">professional therapist<\/a> is there to support you and be on your side.<\/strong> You will not have to &#8216;prove&#8217; anything. You will be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\"> listened to<\/a>.Then the therapist will help you process the feelings your memories bring up for you, irrespective of the &#8216;exact&#8217; details of your trauma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that just as a good therapist won&#8217;t make you feel your memories aren&#8217;t true, they also will not try to make you think something happened you don&#8217;t have a memory of.<\/strong> This is known as &#8216;implanting false memories&#8217;, and is unethical, not to mention dangerous for you as a client. It is a safe space, and the power of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">someone intently listening to you<\/a> can have this affect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there is no guarantee therapy will help you remember things.<\/strong> In fact its entirely possible to experience the opposite. Some people go to therapy worried they were abused, but discover it was some other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> altogether.<\/p>\n<h2>If I am not going to remember exactly what happened to me, why bother with therapy?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Here\u2019s the big secret about getting over childhood sexual abuse and trauma. The exact details of what did and didn\u2019t happen are not the most important thing. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What actually matters is recognising and dealing with your symptoms.<\/strong>\u00a0This might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, edginess, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">sexual acting out<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">self harm<\/a>, the list goes on.\u00a0 Such symptoms get better when your process your emotions and upset, regardless of exact facts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the worst things you can do if you suspect you were abused is to ignore your symptoms. Or\u00a0 not seek support<\/strong>\u00a0because you are too busy &#8216;figuring out exactly what happened&#8217;. Constantly focussing on details can mean you are re-traumatising yourself.
