So conversation with more than two or three people is hard, because it feels like too much information to process in real time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I listen and hear all the words but I sometimes have to ask the other person to repeat what they said as the message doesn&#8217;t sink in<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think this is the information processing delay I\u2019ve read about in people with Asperger\u2019s. But it&#8217;s just that unfortunately I can only deal with one thing at a time, and can\u2019t switch attention instantaneously.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I take things literally&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A discussion of my traits should include my black-and-white and literal interpretation of things. Before my Asperger\u2019s diagnosis I often received comments about this.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I can get too drawn into the details&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>People also often commented about my tendency\u00a0 to go into detail. It caused problems when I used to get drawn into details at the expense of the big picture. After much time and effort this happens less, and I use it sparingly as a strength.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I can be too blunt for other people&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another of my tendencies is blunt truthfulness when speaking. I always feel driven to be precise and accurate even in personal matters. They don&#8217;t understand that<\/strong> it&#8217;s just not about changing a habit. Having an ingrained way of doing things is really important to me. A big disruption can lead to real consequences for me.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I can go into &#8216;fight or flight&#8217; mode really easily&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Back to noises. Some of them can can affect me quite badly and even sometimes cause a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight-or-flight reflex<\/a>, taking me time to recover. It might be jarring noises like the squeak of a rubber trainer sole on a supermarket floor, or the scream of a small child. Sudden loud noises such as doors banging or heavy objects being dropped nearby shock me and I really jump.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I can be emotionally detached&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ironically my Asperger personality sometimes makes it easier to judge urgent practical matters without wasting time worrying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">I\u2019ve read that people with Asperger\u2019s can be very effective in the emergency services, because of the ability to be emotionally detached.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;I am often less prepared socially than others&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lacking the instinctive awareness of others leads to stumbling into situations without time to prepare yourself.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_100023\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4701988981_63d91739c5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100023\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100023\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4701988981_63d91739c5-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"characteristics of aspergers\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4701988981_63d91739c5-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4701988981_63d91739c5.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/vagueonthehow\/4701988981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">vagueonthehow<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">I am just constantly aware that\u00a0I seem to be on a different wavelength \u2013 humour, reasoning, perception, indeed most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communicating<\/a> and thinking processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s not always easy but I keep trying.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>All my life, trying to understand and follow the rules and expectations of society has caused me <\/strong>embarrassment, confusion, frustration and even mental health issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">People with Asperger Syndrome have to learn interpersonal skills gradually over our lifetime by continually observing, intellectualising, experimenting and making fine adjustments until we do things better. This is mentally exhausting over the course of a day.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>I also think our blindness to the normal rules of society makes people with Asperger&#8217;s more prone to <\/strong>mental health problems. I believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">depression<\/a> is prevalent among us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asperger&#8217;s neither goes away nor gets any easier.<\/strong> All I can do is adjust over time and focus on how my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">different ways of thinking and behaving<\/a> can sometimes be strengths.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need an Asperger&#8217;s diagnosis?
