And it&#8217;s a difference we as parents need to understand.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Feeling at wit&#8217;s end with parental stress? <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=harleytherapy.co.uk&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">Book Online therapy<\/a> on our sister site and be receiving help as soon as tomorrow.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Daily Stress vs Long-Term Stress\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>General, day-to-day stressors see parents snappy and tired, but still<\/strong> attuned to their children\u2019s needs and still acting like themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But stress arising from<\/strong> out of control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/workplace-stress-help-guide.htm\">workplace issues<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"> unresolved childhood issues<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">life change<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">relationship conflict<\/a> is more serious, for both you and your children. It leaves a parent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">distracted<\/a>, edgy, and with a changing personality.<\/p>\n<p><em>So how does serious parental stress affect children?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Stress Gives Children The Wrong Signal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Children need to feel safe and secure being themselves.<\/strong> This allows them to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">healthy attachment<\/a> to a parent. They then grow up into an adult who can develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">healthy relationships<\/a> with others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">A stressed parent often becomes a reactive parent, or a parent who exhibits fear. Imagine that<\/strong> another child hits yours as they exit the school gates. Instead or having a chat with the other parent then soothing your child, a stressed parent can feel an inner button pushed by the experience. He or she will overreact, yell at the other child, and tell off the mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your own child is left to watch, uncomforted. They take on board the message that you as a parent are not available<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">The world is no longer a safe place<\/a>. Not because another child reached out and slapped them, but because they are left feeling, \u201cMommy or Daddy cannot help me.\u201d Worse, they can somehow feel it\u2019s all their fault, and stop feeling comfortable being themselves.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Empathic Stress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Stress transfers from one person to another through what is called<\/strong> \u2018empathic stress\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">If we are watching someone else be stressed, we don\u2019t just feel their stress mentally or emotionally, we even replicate it biologically. Our own cortisol levels shoot up.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0306453014001243\">2014 German\/USA study<\/a> found that if the person observing knows the stressed out person intimately, they the react up to 40 per cent more strongly. Given how attuned children are to their parents, you can imagine how acutely they can feel parental stress.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Infants and Stressed Mothers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_99959\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99959\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99959\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5528550876_a90a4fa30d-400x244.jpg\" alt=\"parental stress and children\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5528550876_a90a4fa30d-400x244.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5528550876_a90a4fa30d.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-99959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/koadmunkee\/5528550876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">george ruiz<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2014\/02\/111661\/stress-contagious-study-shows-babies-can-catch-it-their-mothers\">study that hit headlines<\/a> showed that parental stress is \u2018contagious\u2019 for infants.<\/strong> Cardiovascular sensors measured the heart rates of mothers and infants both before and after the mother was asked to give a presentation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The mothers who were given negative feedback on their presentation were reunited with their babies. Within two minutes the babies heart rates increased. It was as if they were \u2018catching\u2019 their mothers stress.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Children Mimic Your Stressful Habits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Modelling&#8217; is a psychological term for the way we learn by observation.<\/strong> It&#8217;s not as simple as just imitation. For example, we also decide whether or not to take on a behaviour\u00a0 depending on the result we see the other person achieving with it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But the more consistent your behaviours are, the more you child sees you achieving things through stress &#8211; getting things by yelling, for example?\u00a0 The more likely they are to begin to act just like you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Stress and Ad Hoc Parenting<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Stress causes<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhaustion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy thinking<\/a>. The more stressed we are, the less consistent our parenting becomes. We start substituting healthy meals with junk food, we don\u2019t notice that our kid\u2019s bedtime has passed, we forget to sign the permission slip. These are, on their own, not the be all and end all of parenting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the more we let our parental stress go on, the more this can become a growing snowball of inconsistency.<\/strong> While naturally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilient<\/a> children might manage, a child who needs structure can start to exhibit his or her own stress in response.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So What Can Be Done About Parental Stress?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There are many good tactics to protect your children against your stress.<\/strong> These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">mindful parenting<\/a><\/li>\n<li>being honest with your child that you are not yourself<\/li>\n<li>explaining what you are going through in age-appropriate terms your child understands and does not leave your child feeling unsafe or worried<\/li>\n<li>constantly reassure your child<\/li>\n<li>deciding on healthy stress strategies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a> over wine, reading over TV)<\/li>\n<li>sharing your strategies for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress management<\/a> with your child or doing them together (thus modelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilience<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-care-a-help-guide.htm\">self-care<\/a> over stress).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Is Parental Stress Worth Seeking Support Over?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The most important thing a parent can do if they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">overwhelmed by stress<\/a> is seek support.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">Counselling and psychotherapy<\/a> <strong>is not there just for when we hit rock bottom, <\/strong>it is there to stop rock bottom ever happening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A talk therapist creates a safe space for you to vent.
