About Dr Michelle Hamill

Background

Dr Hamill holds a DClinPsy alongside an MSc in Applied Psychology, a BA (Hons) Psychology, a PGDip in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), and EMDR standard training. She has trained across a number of respected university institutions including Trinity College, University of Dublin; Manchester University, and the University of East Anglia.

Her MSc research focused on a case study of dissociative identity disorder, and her doctoral research explored the use of therapeutic letters in CAT. She has also served as Principal Investigator for three randomised research trials in conjunction with UCL, exploring therapeutic interventions for depression and sleep issues in dementia, and ACT for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) in later life.

Michelle has trained extensively across multiple therapeutic modalities including CAT, EMDR, ACT, CFT, CBT, narrative approaches, and neuropsychology, and maintains her skills through regular CPD training. Her practice is grounded in strong theoretical foundations and shaped by current evidence-based practices and guidelines.

Therapeutic Approach

Michelle works in a warm, compassionate way, creating a space where you can feel safe to explore what has brought you to therapy and to work towards real change. She places real importance on the therapeutic relationship, working with you collaboratively to understand the roots of your difficulties and to build a practical, personalised plan that reflects your own strengths, values, and goals.

Drawing on extensive training across a wide range of evidence-based therapies, she takes an integrative and holistic approach, developing a way of working that fits you rather than applying a single model. Her practice is person-centred,neuro-affirming and gender-affirming. The focus throughout is on building insight, developing healthier coping strategies, and supporting lasting personal growth and resilience.

Areas of Focus

Michelle offers therapeutic interventions tailored across a wide spectrum of emotional, physical, neurodivergent and relational challenges across adulthood and into later life. From mild concerns to complex presentations, she offers support for challenges including, but not limited to, mood and anxiety-related conditions, trauma-induced experiences such as PTSD and complex trauma, grief and bereavement, as well as adjustment and relationship-based difficulties.

Her expertise extends to navigating life transitions such as long-term health conditions, retirement, and assuming caregiving roles, among others. This comprehensive approach ensures that clients receive tailored support for their unique circumstances.

Professional Experience

Within the NHS, Michelle was responsible for the provision of a thriving and forward-thinking team of highly skilled clinical psychologists, family and arts therapists delivering excellence in care and addressing inequalities in access, with compassion and collaboration to bring about change for the better. Identifying strengths and working relationally to build resilience is core to her approach. Teaching, training, and supervision are central to this. Developing and maintaining psychologically minded ways of understanding and working to promote and maintain safety, mental health, and coping strategies, for clients and colleagues is imperative.

Michelle held a strong record on staff retention and work force satisfaction. She is also actively involved in teaching, training, and supervision, and is a strong advocate for embedding research into everyday clinical practice. Michelle has taught on a range of topics at doctoral and postgraduate level in the UK and in Ireland.

Therapeutic Approaches

Who is Dr Michelle Hamill Best Suited For?

If you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed and would like a compassionate, collaborative space to explore what's going on, I can help you understand the patterns underlying your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, while developing strategies to create meaningful change and move towards your goals.

Many of my clients appear to have everything together on the outside but privately struggle with burnout, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, relationship difficulties, or a sense of disconnection. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space to explore these experiences, alongside the impact of trauma, life transitions, and challenges with boundaries or prioritising your own needs.

My approach is neuro-affirmative, gender-affirmative, and trauma-informed. Sessions are conversational, active, and flexible, and I tailor my approach to your individual needs. I generally work in a time-limited way, with the length of therapy guided by your goals and preferences. Together, we'll work at a pace that feels right for you.
