Julie Humphries - Individual and Couple Psychotherapist

"I just wanted to say, Julie is truly wonderful by the way - so perceptive and has helped us immensely over the past couple of weeks."

Julie is an Individual and Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). Julie has completed 3 clinical trainings over 7 years at Tavistock Relationships (an operating unit of The Tavistock Institute for Medical Psychology) and has over 15 years' experience providing therapy to couples and individuals from young adults to older people in later life. As well as her years of experience, Julie brings compassion, kindness and empathy to her work and is committed to providing a non-judgemental and supportive place, where her clients are met with sensitivity and acceptance. As well as practising as a Psychotherapist, Julie was previously Director of Training at Tavistock Relationships, where she still teaches and supervises. Julie has published several articles on domestic violence, couple theory and adoption.

Psychoanalytic therapy aims to provide relief from difficult feelings or emotional suffering, at the same time as working towards understanding yourself and others for long term and deep-seated change. Julie offers a therapeutic relationship in which to do this – one that provides a safe, confidential, and trusting space in which to open up and talk freely, and to look deeper into your concerns and problems.

Julie has experience of working with individual clients on a range of emotional problems including dissatisfaction with life or relationships, anxiety, depression, inability to form satisfactory relationships, confusion around gender or sexuality, grief and loss, the impact of long-term illness and retirement.

In couple therapy, Julie provides an opportunity to help break cycles that can feel very stuck, and to improve both the communication and intimacy between you and your partner. Julie has extensive experience helping couples who come to therapy either with a specific difficulty they are struggling with, or are perhaps feeling overwhelmed by the problems between them. Just some of the issues that Julie can assist with are; struggles around parenting, the birth of a new baby, illness, infertility, problems in the sexual relationship, infidelity, anger and conflict that feels out of control, extended family problems, or difficulties in later life. Julie can also, when needed, help couples to separate better, in a less conflictual and hostile way.
